Description

this project uses a screen-based interactive graphic score to create a structure in an improvised ensemble performance. the score acts as a map to the time based algorithmic component of the piece as well as eliciting certain musical actions or interactions between the players.

Personal Statement

This project comes out of my history as a musician and performer, my study of computers and sound, my interest in programmatic musical systems. These interests have always overlapped with my identity as a visual artist using electronic visual media in other time based art forms such as film, video, and dance.

Recently I have been involved in several musical projects involving electronic music, improvisations, and scores. The combination of these elements has created new exciting possibilities for me in implementing the use of programmatic musical systems in ensemble improvisation.

Background

musical performance
film and video making
scores and sound design for dance
live image processing and performance
electronic music
improvisational music
digital music tool design

Audience

musicians/composers/artists interested in composition/improvisation, organic/digital timberal exploration, and human/computer interaction.

User Scenario

musicians play from the score, the computer analyzes, processes, and guides them through the piece. the score reacts based on the input. events in the present change the future of the piece as well as the past. the visual feedback makes the musicians more aware of their impact on the composition.

Implementation

this project will be implemented in max MSP/jitter using fft anaysis and other techniques to control the time based signal processing in the "back end" of the system. the integration of actionscript through jitter will be used to create the dynamic graphic score.
