Description

"MEGAPHONE3001" is a multiplayer real-time collaborative telephony platform for use on large screens in public space such as sports arenas and concert venues, and movie theaters. It isn't a mobile application, but a phone system that users can call in to. The phone system reacts to buttons and voice to control a screen near the user. It can be used for information, advertising, and is currently setup as a series of games.

Personal Statement

Using the phone as a remote control is something everyone wishes would come true. But downloadable mobile applications and wireless networks like Bluetooth don't actually work (at least not in the way any real person could use them). MEGAPHONE3001 makes it as simple as a phone call. Phone calls are easy to understand for everyone, and they can be used to transmit a lot more data than you might think.

The goal of MEGAPHONE3001 is to make an entertaining way to control a big screen in a public space. This is a good way to make idle time valuable and create ad hoc social connections between strangers.

Audience

1. Any people in public space.
2. Any client that needs it (for example: Screen, Billboard, Media owners, Venue owners.).

User Scenario

1. Call MEGAPHONE3001
2. Player's avatar and callerID shows up on the screen
3. Animate avatar by pressing digit (each digit has different behavior)
4. Wait for 30 sec after last caller called
5. Game initiation, animation with instruction
6. Trivia starts
7. Users can choose answer only once
8. If user's answer is wrong, system disconnects them
9. After 3 or 4 trivia questions, start second chance game in order to give "losers" the opportunity to rejoin main trivia game.
10. Trivia and second chance games get harder and faster with each round.
11. Give prize to people who survive through the last question.

Implementation

MEGAPHONE3001 is using VoIP technology to be compatible with any phone. It receives a phone call as voice over IP and it processes the key press data and voice data which can be either pitch or volume and sends it to the application running on the display.

Conclusion

On a technical level, if the latency between the user's button press and the update on the screen is too long, or users have different latency to the same screen, then realtime games can't be developed perfectly. But the realtime integration of button tone AND voice data combined with refined interaction design, graphics, and sound makes a user experience far above what raw code can deliver.
