Description

Portable Private Space is an exploration in space, location and perceptions. It is a series of inflatable Chambers that helps people rest, relax and contemplate in hyper-stimulating environments. Modern society has the tendency to put people edge through its speed and unending demands. My inflatable Chambers attempt to counteract this problem by providing a clean, private environment free of visual and audio clutter. The idea is to provide a private space for people who don't have enough and to block out excessive stimuli. I will user test these chambers in private and public environments to measure their effectiveness and assess if they are potentially beneficial to society as a whole.

Personal Statement

I developed the Meditation Chamber in my first semester at ITP and have continued to iterate on this initial design. I have changed the focus of the project from meditation and widened its scope to rest, relaxation and contemplation. My goal is to provide affordable, versatile spaces that help people unwind from the streeses of modern society.

Background

"Alchemy & Mysticism" -Taschen
James Turrell - spacial artist
Inflatlbe architecture
Ak Airways
ParaSites (inflatable housing for homeless)
Sensory Deprivation
Geodesic domes - Buckminster Fuller

Audience

People who don't have enough private space or a quiet place to clear their minds.

Implementation

The Chambers are constructed from 4mil plastic (white and black) and are fused together using a household iron. A fan inflates the Chamber, which can then be folded down to fit inside a shopping bag for easy transportation.

The gameplan is to user test the Chambers in private and public environments: people's apartments, corporate work spaces, yoga studios and public spaces like parks and on the streets.
