I am also a first year here at ITP. My background is in computer science, theatre and music. But in the past few years I've been 'working' as a professional traveller. I come from Israel but have lived in East Asia for almost half my life. I have a true passion for travel and have probably been to all (non-muslim) countries in the far East. I have a good knowledge in programming (C/C++), although little experience actually making applications.
Since I do a lot of stage design for theater, I was initially thinking of taking this class in order to work on creating a new interactive-style performance. But thinking it over, what REALLY does interest me is to bridge between cultural gaps, especially languages. I want to work on applications that can help translate and "connect" between two people who don't speak the same language.
I own a Nokia 6260 which is still not out in the states (got it over year ago in Hong Kong). Except for the phone being super slick, its got many options and applications. I must admit that until last week's class I've never even thought of looking at all of those options. I am not that crazy about mobile phones. Definitely think that in the longrun, we'll all learn how damaging they actually are. But can't really survive without them now....
Oh. And I DO love SMS-ing.
