I traveled over 30k miles in 5 months and used MapQuest mobile for at least half of the time I was traveling -
the subscription is a bit too much for an everyday consumer - i might get it for a road trip or two, but not everyday use -
the way it knows your location is through your own input - like the website, you must tell mapquest mobile where you are.
it's great because it remembers your entries for your phone number so you don't have to type on your tiny phone as much.
it is definitely a good crossover application from the web to the cellphone -
as with all good apps on mobile phones, the toughest thing for me is typing in information on the cell phone...
the other great feature is that you can send routes and maps from the web to your phone.
this is the feature i used most - i would usually load my phone with routes/maps a few days before travel.
then when it was time to hit the road, i would load the route on my phone.
it was much better when i upgraded my phone to a 3G network (broadband for your phone) - this is what VCast currently runs on for Verizon Wireless.
i hated waiting for the data to load - occasionally, it took too long to be useful.
though, surprisingly, it had most of the website's functionality.
to improve it, i would add a route corrector or route rating system - mapquest can often have wrong/inaccurate routes, but they don't have a dynamic way to track this -
the cell phone might be a good way to go.
also the sign-up process was not always smooth sailing -
PRIVACY -
- linking your cell phone number with your routes always raises issues of privacy. you never know when tracking your moves can come back to hurt/haunt/help you. though it does not necessarily track where you've actually been, it does track places you might want to go. this is very different from GPS which actually tracks your current physical location.
