I did just a few text messaging here in the States, but when I was back in China, I can't live without it. We've got a bunch of SMS applications out there, like games(kind of like SMS version of MUD), dating/friends-making services, language translations(there's one called KingSoft, but it's in Chinese, sorry. Something like 411SMS).
Why SMS gets so popular in China, I think, partly is because the way how they make money( Service Providers can get their revenue from Carriers ). Also, there're some cultural background reasons. There's an interesting article about it. I've some quotes here:
The Chinese language is particularly well-suited to the telephone keypad, because in Mandarin the names of the numbers are also close to the sounds of certain words; to say "I love you," for example, all you have to do is press 520.
In China, moreover, many people believe that to leave voice mail is rude, and it's a loss of face to make a call to someone important and have it answered by an underling. Text messages preserve everyone's dignity by eliminating the human voice.
