Instructions for using Dropbox
Step 1: Sign up for a free account here:
Step 2: Create a folder in your DropBox folder named with your netid
Step 3: Share this folder
- Right-click on the folder
- Select Dropbox --> Share This Folder
- Enter recipient e-mail as: daniel.shiffman@nyu.edu
- Wait for me to "approve your folder"
You are done! Any files you copy into this folder will magically appear on all three machines at ITP and all three machines at IAC! Wow, totally amazing! This will save you a ton of time.
Some notes:
- You are limited to 2 GB with a free account. If you need more than 2 GB, come and talk to me about it. You can also just copy your files directly onto the machines at ITP and they will sync to IAC.
- If you are sharing an Eclipse project you need to follow a few extra steps to point your Eclipse project to your dropbox folder. I will cover this during the class Eclipse tutorial (and update this page soon with instructions). More about this here: DropBoxStuff
- If you are using the MPE library, you will need to add some code so that your Processing or OF application knows which machine it is on. You can do this by detecting the machine's IP address. Example code is in DropBox under "BigScreensTemplateDropBox.zip".
- If you are running something different (i.e. a different movie for example) on each machine you will need to have everything in your DropBox folder. Since these folders are synced there's no way to store different files on different machines, you just have to store all files on all machines.
- Applications don't transfer properly with DropBox. So always zip up your app files first.
- Using DropBox is required. We are no longer going to spend time at IAC waiting for files to copy (except in emergencies) so make sure your files are shared in advance of your time at IAC. Of course, always bring a back-up of your files on a laptop or hard drive just in case DropBox goes down.
- Unfortunately, DropBox does not work on the wireless network at IAC. If you want to use DropBox while at IAC, you need to configure your machine to use the wired network. IPs
