Advanced Animation Studio - Resources and examples

Login and press the edit link above to post your homework assignment. You may upload your homework wherever you like (ITP server, your own server, blog post, etc.). Here, simply add a link to your work.

Week 1:

Create a 5 sec long animation, displaying a geometric shape enters the screen, and expresses a trait or an attribute. (example - excited, aggressive, tired, curious, etc.)

The trait should be as clear as possible from just watching the animation.
Pay attention to colors, scale and composition.
Draw a sketch of your idea (storyboard) before approaching the animation. Compare the final result to the sketch.
The final video should be rendered as quicktime file (.mov), encoded as h264, in 80% quality, size 1280x720 pixels, 24fps.
Upload the video to a video sharing site (vimeo, youtube) and add your name and a link to the video, or a blog-post with the video embedded.
For presentation in class, please make sure that the files are all on the class computer, before class starts.

Week 2:

Bouncing ball - Create an 8 sec long animation of a bouncing ball, using the borders of the frame as the edges for the ball to bounce from.

You can select between three kinds of balls:
- Heavy iron ball
- Rubber ball
- Balloon
Pay attention to the different nature of motion and timing for the different materials and mass of the balls.
Use any transformation animation in AE, but no 'special effects' to communicate the kind of ball being animated.
If you want to challenge yourself - add a second ball (made from the same material or a different material) and animate the interaction between the balls when they collide.
Draw a storyboard beforehand, and post it in addition to the animation video.
Render and post your work in the same way as the first assignment.

Week 3:

Complex loop - Create a looping animation, of a system made of several moving parts. You can choose between a mechanical or an organic system.

Pay attention to the nature of motion of an organic body, and the way that a machine with internal moving parts works and moves.
Outline the hierarchy of the system, and how the animation is derived from it (which parts are moving as a result of the motion of other parts)
The motion of the system has to make sense as a unified system, but the system can be completely imaginary, and perform imaginary actions.
Render the loop running at least 5 times, so that the final video demonstrates the loop repeating.

Week 4: Mid term pre-production - The mid-term assignment is a 30 sec long animation. Utilize all the newly and previously learned tools and concept, to create a short animated story.

The brief guideline to the animation is to start with a frame that depicts a horizon line and also ends with one. Whatever is in-between is up to you.
For this week - Prepare a written synopsis for the general theme, and the story.
Make at least two style-frames, to explore and demonstrate the visual direction of the project.
Make a first sketch for the storyboard, and how the story can fit into the given time-frame.
Be prepared to present your proposed animated short at class.

Week 5: Mid-term project: pre production into production

Refine and finalize the storyboard and style frames
Move to the production stage - animating
Be prepared to present motion tests of complete scenes in class
Pay attention to sound, framing and timing, and refer to the story board as a guideline to all of these.
If necessary to asses timing to sound, put together an animatic.
Post your work in progress to the wiki.

Interactive animation assignment: part I:

Create a Processing sketch that displays an object / body/ machine in constant motion. It can be an array of many moving objects in conjunction, to depict a more complex system.
The motion should be autonomous and non-repetitive - use variables with changing values to create ever-changing motion
Prepare the sketch to take any kind of user inout to make your moving object responsive or interactive.

Week 9:

Interactive animation assignment: part II:

Add an element of human interaction to the algorithmic animation project.
Pick a type of user input and apply it to any of the parameters of the animation
Pay attention to whether the animation is reactive (like a puppet) or interactive - where users can also respond to the behavior of the animated object.

Week 10:

Final Project Proposal:

Prepare to present a proposal for a final project in class
The project can be of any of the different media that were discussed in class (linear narrative, generative motion, reactive/interactive, installation based, etc.)
The main component of the project should be around animation and animated objects
The proposal has to include a written treatment for the main concept, present the visual direction and the story/interaction flow
Everybody will be presenting, and we will move towards production starting from the following week
