Future Scenarios for Cameras:Our strongest sensor input, the visual system only takes in a few degrees in sharp focus and which is very unreliably stored in our brain. It is not surprising cameras have become our most popular mental prosthesis for capturing phenomena beyond our abilities of time and space. At the moment cameras seem to making those radical jumps in faster, cheaper, better as their partner the networked computer has been doing for years. Expecting huge jumps in imaging, storage, automation and transmission, what kind of devices and applications do you see 10 years in the future. Will cameras be "always on" and edited later for the best moment making "snapping" a picture obsolete? Will cameras routinely capture panoramas making the context and the prejudices of the photographer more apparent? Will cameras come equipped with geo or bio sensors for perhaps registering higher resolution during stressful times or bringing together photos from different people taken in the same place, orientation or time? Will software be able to separate out elements within an image and make as searchable as text? Will governments and corporations use this software to analyze millions of cameras to make the world safe or to enforce conformist behavior? Will tiny $1 camera and analysis extend views that you want to be vigilant of like child proofing or changing lanes on the highway? Please insert a link to a post or write directly on this page.
Forget PhotoSynth - in the future, with video cameras of all kinds and qualities monitoring almost everywhere, researchers will figure out how to composite the video feeds into one seamless, continuous feed. Anyone looking at the feed will be able to scan across any feature, and zoom in, not by actually changing anything on the camera, but by transparently switching to a closer camera.
In the distant future, cameras will be integrated into our sunglasses and just by simply doing a gesture such as creating a square with our
fingers the camera will take a picture. Gesture recognition will be integrated into the sunglasses-camera and many different camera operations
will be available through simple shapes we create. The sunglasses will also act as a screen for the person wearing them. The Nokia Research Center
claims that nanotechnology will become a reality in 7 years, so the sort of camera I'm describing could entirely become possible.

People are already making cars with cameras that can see behind the vehicle to show the driver what is directly behind them. There are
also cars with sensors that detect how close your car is to something behind you and a beep alerts the driver. These proximity sensors
and cameras will eventually be able to detect obstacles of any kind and maneuver a vehicle accordingly. A navigation system in conjunction
with these other sensors and cameras will enable cars to drive themselves and communicate with each other about these obstacles.
