So, you are working on a PComp or ICM assignment and want to use video (live or recorded) in Processing.

I am on a Mac and I want to capture from my webcam

I am on a PC and I want to capture from my webcam

• A PC! Neat-o! Does that run Windows? Could you get me John Hodgman's autograph?
• You could use Processing's Capture class, but you would need to (a) make sure Quicktime is installed on your machine and (b) try installing one of these Vdigs: http://www.eden.net.nz/7/20071008/. Also, some old versions of vdigs and quicktime can be found here: http://www.shiffman.net/vdig/ This is not a terribly reliable solution.

• You could use JMyron: http://webcamxtra.sourceforge.net/

I am on a Mac or PC and I would like to load and display quicktime movies

• If you like motorcross and bungee jumping, go ahead and just use the Movie class: http://processing.org/reference/libraries/video/Movie.html. If your sketch crashes during an in-class presentation, tell your teacher that Daniel Shiffman said it was going to do that and you should be given sympathy and a grade of PASS.

That's annoying, any other suggestions?

• You can use OpenCV: http://ubaa.net/shared/processing/opencv/ Note this works great, won't crash, and is pretty easy to install, but no sound support.
• You can use GSVideo: http://gsvideo.sourceforge.net/. Gather around the campfire, and listen to the tall tale of full-screen HD 1080p video playing in Processing with GStreamer. I've seen it with my own two eyes. Be forewarned, however, setting up GStreamer on your machine (esp. a mac) can cause your hair to fall out or spontaneously catch fire.

I am on a Mac running Snow Leopard and I'm getting linking errors when I try to use the video library

• Open up Java Preferences (/Applications/Utilities/Java Preferences) and change the preferred order of the Java SEs so that the 32 bit version is at the top of the list. If you're using Eclipse, you can go into "Run Configurations..." and then the "Arguments" tab where you can add the flag -d32 to the "VM Arguments" field.
