I wanted to create an information visualization based upon my coffee consumption at Starbuck but realized that the majority of purchases I made there was paid by cash. I couldn’t use my bank statement to calculate how much money I spend there. I really wanted to know my “latte factor” from David Bach who says that “putting aside as little as a few dollars a day for your future rather than spending it on little purchases such as lattes, bottled water, fast food, cigarettes, magazines and so on, can really make a difference between accumulating wealth and living paycheck to paycheck”. This is definitely true and I’m trying to break from my habits.

Back to the data visualization project. I decided to use IBM Many Minds for this project since it was easy to use and allowed me to view various visualization. I used data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

The first visualization is Consumer Complaints Against U.S. Airlines.

Second Visualization: Children and Youth with Disabilities Served by Selected Programs. For this visualization I only used data for 2007.

Portfolio Site Strategy

I checked out the resources that were given to the class from Katherine. I went to Smashing Magazine: 10 Steps to the Perfect Portfolio Website. and also to resource for wireframing.

Then I did a mock up drawing in my notebook from looking at examples of other portfolio sites. From the mock up I looked at what portfolio template sites looked similar.

Here is the wireframe for the home page of the portfolio site:

I then decided on what colors I wanted to use on the site. This will probably change. I choose a green and purple color to use, it might be too bright. I used the illustrator to select a purple that I liked and used the color guide which gives complimentary, analogous, monchromatic and other color combinations.

I looked at several such as wordpress themes such as Shaken and Stirred, SimpleFolio, Brave Zeent and Blue Bubble and Boldy.

I decided on using the WordPress them Boldy since it was much similar to my sketch and had some extra features such as email contact forms and the integration of social networks.

Color IQ Test

This week we had to take a Color IQ Test. Before I finished I went back to the blue hues and made some changes. From the test results those where the areas that I did not do well in. Maybe I should have left the colors in place instead of re-arranging them.

Re-design the ITP Logo

This assignment was the hardest since I hardly know how to use Illustrator or Photoshop. I downloaded the font LLPikseli from dafont.com. I played around with the letters being uppercase or lowercase. For the font I was using lower case was better.
I tried. I knew was restricted to only using the text so I played around with the effects and coloring

Iconic Logo Designer

Analyze Pop-Up Book

I bought a the pop-up book “Babies” from a street vendor on 14th street. The book is very small and it inspired me.

Babies video

For this week assignment we had to buy a Pop-Up Book to see what type of techniques were being used.
I meet a street vendor at 14th street Union Square who sells Pop-Up books. I bought the Babies book from her and for some reason this week I did not see her.
I decided to buy a Pop-Up book from Amazon.com. I choose the Pop-Up House of INVENTIONS by Robert Crowther. Having seen other pop-up books I was a bit disappointed. After looking at it more I thought about what would it be like to create paper doll houses.

I then went to buy a book at Barnes and Nobels in Brooklyn. The book is called Sounds of the Wild Birds by Maurice Pledger. I loved this book since it also includes sounds of the birds. Each page creates a bird sounds depending on the types of birds displayed on the page. It created a nice mood once you opened it. Can I include sound in my pop-up for the final?

I then saw the woman who sells Pop-up books on 14th street and decided to look at what she had since they were better than what the neighboring book stores had.

I selected a Halloween book. It is called Halloween at the Zoo Illustrated by Jason O’Malley and Engineered by Bruce Foster.
