For my final project in Programing A to Z, my last foray into programing in Processing at ITP, I decided to return to my first final project in ICM. I had originally proposed to do two projects for the final but in the end I thought working on this one was more interesting. I took the game I had created before,
Courage vs. Cowardice, and turned it into a new text-based game which I entitled Good vs. Bad. I call this game a Personality Testing Game because the player can receive two outcomes, Good or Bad.

The game very much the same as Courage vs. Cowardice except that the spaceships have been replaced by words. The player flies a fighter on the left side of the screen while words appear and move quickly across the screen from right to left. The player can shoot and destroy the words but this time the player does not shoot a missile but rather the words, "I AM..." The words that appear from the right come in two categories, good adjectives and bad adjectives. Thus when the new "missile" hits a word it briefly forms a sentence such as "I am honest" or "I am wicked."

When a good word is destroyed the player gets a point, When a bad word is destroyed the player loses a point. As before, the player must avoid running into the words (which still follow the Courage vs. Cowardice algorithm) or hitting the buildings on the ground. If that happens the fighter is destroyed and the game is over. Also as before, the sun sets in the background and the screen turns dark as it does. This makes the latter part of the game difficult because the fighter becomes almost invisible in the dark. If the player survives long enough, the game ends and the player is told whether he or she is "good" or "bad" based on the score. The same thing happens if the game ends early with a crash.

This game could easily be expanded. I could envision adding more levels with different words. Perhaps on the next level the question would be, "Are you happy or sad?" The words would then be adjectives for each. What really makes the game interesting is that the player has the opportunity to choose a goal for the ending and then work towards it. But if no goal is chosen, if the player doesn't care whether he or she is good or bad, then the outcome is somewhat random. It all depends on which sentences are created and which words are destroyed.

So in the end the question remains: Are you Good or Bad.

For my final in Programming A to Z, I'm going to build two separate projects. The first is a combination of my Midterm project and my RiTa homework assignment. For my Midterm I used words from my manuscript "Being Yourself" to create a text "flyby." The words flew across the screen from left to right over a house and their speed was determined by the amount of times I used them in my manuscript. Words that were used a lot flew through the screen slower than words that weren't used very often.

I determined the number of times I used each word by running a Concordance program in Ellipse. I then manually inputted the data into Processing.

For this Final Project I am going to use the same manuscript but this time I am going to enter it into a RiTa Markov chain as I did for my RiTa homework. The result is that the words become garbled to a certain degree but they still form sentences, just not any sentence I ever wrote in the manuscript. Sometimes, the new sentences don't make much sense but often they come out sounding like a strange form of poetry which I entitled, "Philosophic Poetry" because of their content. In the Final Project, I will allow the user to choose which chapter the sentences come from and then the sentence will scroll across the screen from right to left. The direction of the words is important because the sentences vary in length, some being short and others long. Were I to try to just have them appear right away on screen it would be difficult to make sure they always fit. In addition, the scrolling feature makes each sentence easy to read as it goes by. The user will also have the option of pressing a key to view new sentences either from the same chapter or a different chapter.

For my second Final project, I am going to take an old program I created and change it. The old program was the one I created in Processing for my ICM Final, a game called Courage vs. Cowardice.

Click Here to Play Courage vs. Cowardice
Game Controls:
I = Up
M = Down
F = Fire missile

In this game, the player flies a Stealth Fighter and attempts to shoot down alien spaceships with missiles. The player can only move the fighter up and down as the spaceships appear to fly in from the right. As this is going on, the sun sets in the background and the sky grows dark. If the player can stay alive long enough, the level is completed. The game is called Courage vs. Cowardice because the spaceships randomly move up or down as they get close to the fighter. This has the effect of sometimes making them move away from the fighter (dodging) or move right at the fighter (kamikaze).

For my Programming A to Z Final, I will take the same game and replace the spaceships with words from my manuscript. I will call this new game, Word Fighter. I think this is a perfect way to wrap up or bookend my experience of programming at ITP.

I took the introduction and first chapter of my manuscript, "Being Yourself" and ran the RiTa Markov code on it several times. The result was lines of what I'm calling Philosophical Poetry.

Introduction Text:

You are unique. Stop for a moment and think about what that means. Think about the implications of that statement. You are unique, which means that in this world inhabited by over six billion people, there is only one of you. Just one. There is nobody else exactly like you in this world right now. But wait, that’s not all. You are unique, which means that in the entire history of this world and among all the billions of people who have ever lived in this world, there has never been anyone else exactly like you. And that’s not all of it, either. You are unique, which means that in the future, among the almost infinite number of people who have yet to be born in this world, there will never be anyone else exactly like you. You are one of a kind for all time, and the same is true for all human beings no matter when or where they were born.

Now, you have to admit that the idea of being unique is a startling one. How can nature accomplish this? How can it be possible? There must be some mistake, right? No. In fact, nature is a master of creating things that are unique. Perhaps the best example of this, and one that is even more unbelievable than human uniqueness is the fact that every snowflake is one of kind. This is something that I, personally, find mind-boggling. Just think of how many snowflakes there must be in one snowstorm. Then think of how many snowstorms there are in the world in a year. Then think of how many snowstorms there have been in the past. Then think of how many are yet to come. The final number of snowflakes must be almost inconceivable, and yet the statement is still true: no two snowflakes are exactly alike.

Okay, so being unique is possible in nature, and human beings are only one of many examples. So what? Why should anybody care? What difference does being one of a kind make? The answer to that question is simple: a huge difference. If a person truly recognizes that he or she is unique, and if that person also recognizes that every other human being is unique, then the manner in which that person thinks about himself or herself, as well as the rest of the world, will be tremendously affected. In fact, I believe that if enough people used this method of thinking, the world just might become a better place. However, in order to fully explain what I mean in those last two sentences, I would need to write an entire book. And so I have.

Poetry from Introduction:

Perhaps the fact that question is unique, which means that means.

Think about himself or herself, as the idea of many snowflakes there will never be born in one snowstorm.

Then think of thinking, the implications of thinking, the past.

Okay, so being unique is unique, and if enough people used this world, will be in this world, there has never been anyone else exactly like you.

And so being one of being unique is unique, then the almost infinite number of being one of people who have ever lived in one of kind.

Stop for all time, and among all time, and one of this world right now.

What difference does being one of thinking, the world, there is unique, which that person truly recognizes that every snowflake is even more unbelievable than human beings no two sentences, I mean in the same is a kind make?

The answer to that I, personally, find mind-boggling.

But wait, that's not all the rest of a moment and the manner in this world inhabited by over six billion people, there will be some mistake, right?

In fact, nature is possible in one snowstorm.

Poetry from Chapter One: Being a Unique Individual

As it turned out, he never put on a unique individual?

Not at an individual for an instant.

I perceived those around who taught me become one of identification.

Only identical twins, can think he said.

I had done something wrong with me to be arrogant.

Does that my choice was so much.

The first principle, if I am unique, how can see all my father assured them how can see all the girl in this realization was young, despite his arrogance, and in fact, I wanted me any way.

Because of the easiest thing Iíve had enough strength to make me how can think my personality was four or one ever done.

I ever agree on his convictions.

It seemed that really felt the other person I can see the biology behind our genes.

We all the imagination to be arrogant in fact, one could really trust, people whom I was the girl, and punishing him what I was when I suppose there are two years of themselves.

As I canít argue that person with toys.

They were probably the second factor has nothing wrong with our uniqueness.

This brings us, though, to peer pressure a thing Iíve ever did I am today, I believe that most important it exactly the kid be afraid to determine the whole thing because they who thought I hate me.

This fact that episode was strong individual, and an extension of their offspring.

Of course, one of a great example of the fact that last statement could attribute this behavior.

Even my friends and well-liked kids in denial about what was the question and the same people would have a strong individual myself, and that way too often telling him so I am confident in fact, I could cause problems.

It seemed that allowed their offspring.

Of course, I was a few times when I try to individuality, but the fact that my personality was present, and that it was a stronger individual so much.

The difference between lives, because of the world as far as an individual.

I am unique, and canít argue that she was raised to do to be able to influence my father, in myself as an example.

When I was in particular.

However, I was interesting to do not?

First of the appearance of the parents.

She and a very strong suspicion that is unimportant.

What I ever heard growing up.

They prefer to this world, they told to follow.

This was a lot of existence, Iíve acted like a lesser sense of others.

You might find ways to have expected to be combined.

This is often than done.

My Midterm project is a text visualization of a manuscript I wrote called "Being Yourself." My plan was to have the words from the manuscript flying across the screen over the ground and buildings. Unfortunately, I ran into some problems getting the code to work so I ultimately just did most of the work manually in Processing. I did start, however, with the Concordance code in Java which I used to reorganize the manuscript and pull the amount of times I used each word.

In the end, what I came up with was all right. The words fly across from left to right and the words that are used more frequently move slower. I could only pick about forty words from the manuscript saw I picked the ones that I thought were most relevant. Unfortunately, I forgot that the "random" function in Processing isn't so random so a lot of the words get bunched together. I would like to use a better algorithm for determining the speed of the words. As it is, the fast words are difficult to read.

For the Final, I would like to grab weather data off the Internet and use that as a way to add weather to the visualization if I stick with this particular one.

Using Regular Expressions and "replace word," I added a little phrase every time Bush says "I." There was one place where it didn't quite work but overall I think it was effective. Now Bush is being honest when he talks about himself. Here's the new text followed by the code:

Good afternoon. I, the worst President ever,'d like to, first, thank Prime Minister Olmert and President Abbas for their hospitality during my trip here to the Holy Land. We had very good meetings, and now is the time to make difficult choices.

I, the worst President ever, underscored to both Prime Minister Olmert and President Abbas that progress needs to be made on four parallel tracks. First, both sides need to fulfill their commitments under the road map. Second, the Palestinians need to build their economy and their political and security institutions. And to do that, they need the help of Israel, the region, and the international community. Third, I, the worst President ever, reiterate my appreciation for the Arab League peace initiative, and I, the worst President ever, call upon the Arab countries to reach out to Israel, a step that is long overdue.

In addition to these three tracks, both sides are getting down to the business of negotiating. I, the worst President ever, called upon both leaders to make sure their teams negotiate seriously, starting right now. I, the worst President ever, strongly supported the decision of the two leaders to continue their regular summit meetings, because they are the ones who can, and must, and -- I, the worst President ever, am convinced -- will lead.

I, the worst President ever, share with these two leaders the vision of two democratic states, Israel and Palestine, living side by side in peace and security. Both of these leaders believe that the outcome is in the interest of their peoples and are determined to arrive at a negotiated solution to achieve it.

The point of departure for permanent status negotiations to realize this vision seems clear: There should be an end to the occupation that began in 1967. The agreement must establish Palestine as a homeland for the Palestinian people, just as Israel is a homeland for the Jewish people. These negotiations must ensure that Israel has secure, recognized, and defensible borders. And they must ensure that the state of Palestine is viable, contiguous, sovereign, and independent.

It is vital that each side understands that satisfying the other's fundamental objectives is key to a successful agreement. Security for Israel and viability for the Palestinian state are in the mutual interests of both parties.

Achieving an agreement will require painful political concessions by both sides. While territory is an issue for both parties to decide, I, the worst President ever, believe that any peace agreement between them will require mutually agreed adjustments to the armistice lines of 1949 to reflect current realities and to ensure that the Palestinian state is viable and contiguous. I, the worst President ever, believe we need to look to the establishment of a Palestinian state and new international mechanisms, including compensation, to resolve the refugee issue.

I, the worst President ever, reaffirm to each leader that implementation of any agreement is subject to implementation of the road map. Neither party should undertake any activity that contravenes road map obligations or prejudices the final status negotiations. On the Israeli side that includes ending settlement expansion and removing unauthorized outposts. On the Palestinian side that includes confronting terrorists and dismantling terrorist infrastructure.

I, the worst President ever, know Jerusalem is a tough issue. Both sides have deeply felt political and religious concerns. I, the worst President ever, fully understand that finding a solution to this issue will be one of the most difficult challenges on the road to peace, but that is the road we have chosen to walk.

Security is fundamental. No agreement and no Palestinian state will be born of terror. I, the worst President ever, reaffirm America's steadfast commitment to Israel's security.

The establishment of the state of Palestine is long overdue. The Palestinian people deserve it. And it will enhance the stability of the region, and it will contribute to the security of the people of Israel. The peace agreement should happen, and can happen, by the end of this year. I, the worst President ever, know each leader shares that important goal, and I, the worst President ever, am committed to doing all I, the worst President ever, can to achieve it.

Thank you.

Elements:

Map
4 Artillery Pieces labeled “LR” for Long Range, 2 per player, shooting range 12”
4 Artillery Pieces labeled “SR” for Short Range, 2 per player, shooting range 8”
12” ruler
Hit-Point Scorecard

Gameplay:

Turns:
This game is played by turns with each player having the opportunity to move or fire each turn. A coin-toss at the begin determines which player moves first every turn.

Starting Positions:
Each player begins with four artillery pieces in the same spot at the edge of the map. The position for each player is opposite one another.

Movement:
Every turn, each piece can either move one block or a half a block. In addition, a player can move a piece from the middle of a block, around the corner, to the middle of another block. No piece can move across the square in the middle of the map.
Players can move two or more pieces to the same position.
If a player wants to shoot with a particular piece, that piece cannot move in that turn.

Shooting:
A player can fire on a target if the target is within range (12 inches for a Long Range artillery piece or 8 inches for a Short Range piece). If the target is in direct line-of-sight, that is if the target is on the same street as the shooting piece, then the target can be fired upon. However, of the target is in direct line-of-sight, then the shooting piece can fire at the target over the intervening blocks but with two requirements. One, the first block that the shot passes over has to have a number of “1” and the second block the shot passes over as to have a number of “1” or “2.” Two, the last block the shot passes over must have a number of “1” and the second-to-last block the shot passes over must have a number of “1” or “2.”

Damage:
Each artillery piece has 6 hit points. When a piece is fired on, dice rolls determine the amount of hit points that are lost. When a piece loses all of its hit points, it is eliminated. When a piece is fired on in direct line-of-sight, one die is rolled to determine damage. When the a piece is fired on outside of a direct line-of-site, two dice are rolled. If the number is 6 or less, the shot has missed the target and there is no damage. However, if the number from the dice roll is 7 or up, damage is in inflicted and hit points are lost.

7 = 1 hit point damage
8 = 2 hit point damage
9 = 3 hit point damage
10 = 4 hit point damage
11 = 5 hit point damage
12 = 6 hit point damage

In addition, Short Range artillery pieces cause more damage than Long Range artillery pieces. Dice rolls from a short-range shot are multiplied by 1.5. When determining damage from a non-line-of-sight shot, it is the hit point damage that is multiplied by 1.5, not the number from the cumulative dice rolls.

An artillery piece that sustains 3 or more hit points of damage has its firing range cut in half.

If two pieces that are in the same position are fired upon, they will each have the possibility of receiving damage through separate dice rolls.

Winning Conditions

The game ends when all of one player’s artillery pieces are eliminated.

Here's an accessible version of Pong.

Accessible Pong

Changes for accessibility:

- The original Pong game had shapes that were difficult to see which relates to what I've read here, "Making Video Games Accessible: Business Justifications and Design Considerations" (http://gamasutra.com/features/20060920/zahand_04.shtml). The general solution is to change the game so that it is in black and white as proposed here, "Making Video Games Accessible: Business Justifications and Design Considerations" (http://gamasutra.com/features/20060920/zahand_04.shtml). Applied to pong, the background is white so the paddles and ball are black along with the text.

- The original Pong game used the mouse which was difficult to control. this realates to what I read here "Making Video Games Accessible: Business Justifications and Design Considerations" (http://gamasutra.com/features/20060920/zahand_06.shtml). The general solution is to change the game so that the controls are easier to use. Although the suggestion cited here "Making Video Games Accessible: Business Justifications and Design Considerations" (http://gamasutra.com/features/20060920/zahand_04.shtml) is to minimize button use, the options are limited with a personal computer so I changed the controls so that they used two of biggest buttons on the keyboard, the "TAB" and "ENTER" keyes.

- The original Pong game had the ball moving very fast which made it difficult to react to. This relates to the what I read here, "Designing Usable and Accessible Games with Interaction Design Patterns" http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/1408/designing_usable_and_accessible_.php?page=4. The general solution is to change the game to slow it down which is cited here, "Designing Usable and Accessible Games with Interaction Design Patterns" http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/1408/designing_usable_and_accessible_.php?page=4. In the new version, the ball moves slower and when a point is scored it comes back moving away from the player so that the player has more time to react.

- Although subtitles aren't really required in Pong it helps to have everything spelled out as cited here "Designing Usable and Accessible Games with Interaction Design Patterns" http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/1408/designing_usable_and_accessible_.php?page=4. Following the proposal for sub-title cited here, "Making Video Games Accessible: Business Justifications and Design Considerations" (http://gamasutra.com/features/20060920/zahand_03.shtml). All of the command instructions and the end-game condition is spelled out clear.

Rebalancing:
To compensate for the slower ball, both the comptuer's paddle and the ball increase speed when either the player or the computer reach a score of 16. This is the effect of making the end of the game very exciting and challenging.

This game is called ITP Deadlines. It is still a basic shooter game based on a student's experience at ITP. Leah and I worked on this by combining previous games with our new symbols and art work. For us, this project is a big improvement over our last attempt because this project resulted in a working game.

The Core Mechanie is the mouse moving the Pawn left and right and the mouse button that fires Energy Balls. The Game Elements are the Pawn, controlled by the player, Energy Balls, shot by the player, the Project Materials which move back and forth and are the target for the Energy Balls, the Cellphones which randomly fly across the screen and can interfere with the Energy Balls, and the Timer and the Score Display which count how much time is left in the game and how many points the player has respectively.

The objective of the game is to hit the Project Materials with as many Energy Balls as possible before the time runs out.
