Proposal Why How Sound Studies Resources

dogdogdgo Sound Studies

The sounds will relate to 4 factors:

  • Size of the dog
  • Speed of the dog
  • Dogs' spatial relationship to one another
  • Dogs location in space along x and y coordinates

For example, orchestration might include:

  • Medium collar #3: Low bongo increasing in speed with dog speed
  • Small collar #2: Tambourine increasing in volume with dog speed
  • Small dogs in close proximity: high xylophone chords
  • Large dog and small dog in close proximity: gong
  • 2 large dogs near gate: triangle

The sounds will enhance the chaotic, wild nature of the interactions in the dog run. We will work with a sound artist to more specifically develop sounds for the piece. For phase one of the project, the sound will be output through speakers situated along the edges of the dog run fence, facing outward to create spatialized sound.. For phase two, we would like to develop acoustic sound sculptures that will be placed throughout the park.
