Participa.TV
April 6th, 2007Just-an-idea:
So, this idea hit me like a meteor very recently. It really has no real purpose except that it is fun. It can also be viewed as an idea that will contribute to the well being of lazy bones. So here is what it is -
It is a TV where at any given time the channels are constantly flipping. Consider it as the opposite of a regular cable TV where one channel is on at any given time. A treadmill or some other workout machine is wired to the TV. Only when the person starts working out does the TV switch to a normal mode and one can enjoy watching TV. Everytime he/she stops working out, the channels start to change rapidly. The one line elevator pitch?
“you can’t watch this TV unless you participate actively”

Phone-Casting
March 21st, 2007So I tried sending a video from N93 to blip.tv and the phone would not allow anything above 300kb. Then i tried sending an image and all that showed up was this.
But i’m still trying. Lets see what happens hereon. And in about 1 hour I did it! See the posting after this.
On Henry Jenkin
February 26th, 2007I thoroughly enjoyed his talk and his views on the power of grass root new media and its correlation to the governance. Points of interest-
Bottom up media and its power
How the government is clueless about pop-culture
Convergence culture where same media is spread across multiple platforms
The power of collective intelligence
The most enlightening part about the talk was, and to which I agree and find it impossible to think of a solution to, when he talks about how “we cannot simply celebrate participatory tools” and how this can be so easily doctored and hacked in a negative way and almost anyone can do so. I guess this brings to question the whole issue about - should there be control online and if not then will the so called call for “net neutrality” be able to protect and guarantee fair practise?
Web 2.0s - Striking Gold
February 25th, 2007“25 startups to watch” - This article I feel is really interesting in that, it is an extension of the presentation James and I gave in class about Web 2.0 and the survival of the fittest and the best. Read here
In todays world, one would imagine that with the ubiquity of personal computers, most of the promising future developments in the WEB 2.0 frontier would be occurring all over the place. But it is NOT! What is most astonishing about this article is that of the 25 companies listed as the most promising and the next YouTube - 18 are from California, mostly Bay Area. 1 from Atlanta, 1 from Portland, 2 from New York , 1 from Utah, 1 from Luxembourg and 1 from Madrid, Spain.
Blinded by the light
February 18th, 2007I had a quicktime streaming server and my partners in crime didn’t. So here we are having fun as always being asked thought provoking question by Yonatan. A thought just came to my mind - is it always possible to know what is being streamed and what is not? It could be very well be made to look like it is being streamed.

Dreaming Streaming
February 18th, 2007The quality so far, of things I have watched streamed sucks! However once that gets better streaming will enable something much better than what LIVE TV reporting is today, on the web. I can immediately imagine a powerful web-came in the vast depths of the outer space constantly streaming stellar images. Web-cam in the Moon, Mars…why not. Maybe we’ll see God passing by sometimes! But jokes apart, the possibilities are endless. If issues of delay, congestion is resolved and super fine quality streaming is possible, I see the possibility of being closer to home everyday vicariously.
Sometimes we accept technology for the sake of technology. I for one am not always sure that just because a technology surfaces that it must have a reason to succeed. Streaming enables live broadcast but the quality is so bad that continuous viewing is not possible. You’d rather have something edited and to your eyes and ears if it is a matter of some value. Like say lectures, drive-bys etc…
Interesting Sites
I feel that a genuinely strong purpose for streaming is still lacking and is yet to be harnesses. I browsed through a lot of sites to find something that would catch my eyes but to no avail. The only thing that came close to something I’d like to use, if the quality was better, was EarthCam. This site allows you to go anywhere in the world and find web-cams and view them.
Many zoos have cams but watching animal through a web-cam makes you want to never see them again. Quality issue again. I checked out the San Diego zoo cams. Not impressive at all. In closing, the porn industry however has been able to fully reap the benefits of live web streaming but then again that industry is different ball game all together.
POP-UP Ballad of Anil & Myra
February 12th, 2007I’ve always had some fascination with music, which most of you are aware of by now. The idea that had been haunting me for a while and I really wanted to pursue was to be able to create some form of dynamic music based story telling. A music video that told and depicted not just THE story in that particular music but somehow managed to crawl all over and aggregate other related stories and lay in side by side with out being intrusive and ugly. In a way what happened was “likable-pop-ups”. As her name suggests a genius came to my rescue with her coding fortitude and together we were victorious.
To view the Ballad of Anil and Myra properly, allow popups for the site and press the “Play” link.

The Future
February 5th, 2007So what is the future of today’s media? Is it predictable? Who will re-define media? WEB 2.0…how far can we think today…WEB 2.5 perhaps, maybe 3….what will WEB 7.0 be like….or something absolutely new, beyond the scope of today’s human comprehension will revolutionize the media landscape?
Who knows right?…but some of the above intriguing and exciting question are answered to some degree by Andrew Blau. The changing shape and structure of the media marketplace and how affordable means of production has empowered non-professionals is an interesting phenomenon which will, in the long run, be the major driving force of this new future of media. What is also called as the “bottom-up-energy” will whip up vast amount of creativity and give new meaning to all aspects of media.
I like the idea of how all this bottom up energy will be able to create super niche markets, which in a way is already happening. This means, almost everyone has a market place to sell, to be heard or just to participate using the power of the media. On the contrary however there is also the danger of excessive output being churned out which is inturn outpacing consumption and where does this lead us? Maybe since the big audience is getting smaller and the small getting bigger everyone has a chance in the new - media future. There is no allegiance to categoris anymore which means there is no formula for success anymore either. I guess all in all, this article is telling us to - BEWARE OF THE FUTURE!
