book reading & researching

1. experimental eco -> design
2. sustainable design- a user guide
3. cradle to cradle
____________________________________________________________

goal ! finalize the arguments. agree or not or maybe better solution.

*experimental eco -> design aaaaa

Look GOOD, FEELS GOOD, IS GOOD? by Edwin Datschefski http://www.biothinking.com

a. the problem with end of life design.
b. the goal of sustainable design is to make all prodcts 100-percent cyclic., solar, and safe. Designers must look to a future in which everything is completely compatible with nature. The question should always be" Is this designchoice moving us in the right direction? "

CREATIVE COMMUNITIES by Ezio Manzini

These creative communities are all profoundly rooted in one place; they base themselves on local resources and, directly or indirectly, promote new forms of socialization. At the same time, they are connected to networks of similar initiatives(首創精神) on an international scale, so they can compare their experiences and share the problems. The communities are therefore local entities but also cosmopolitan(國際性的).

door project

gotta make a time line for the door project.
I have two goal to achive in this project.
one is the mechenical structure of the moving door with motor.
the other one is the masurment. over all, it would be a device that can install in any exsisten door.
to power and store for another use.

physics
1. try different kind of motor
2. make prototype
3. try plastic and wood to build the structure.
4. keep exploring....

masurments
1. make the ampmeter
2. voltage meter?!
3. data base
4. talk to arduino

pummer 1

today Roger and I started to build pummer. the circuit is quiet complex. we had to double check the wires and make sure the connection on each section. here is the progress!!
Pummer

01_4.7Mresistor
* we try to build 4.7M with 4 1M and 7 100k resistors.
the masurement is 1585 for the risistance from 7 100k.
we don't know why?! it's a little confusing.

02_1.2Vbattery01
*try to figure out if the battery is fully charge or not.

03_pummer01
*complete the circuit !

04_pummer03
*close up.

Questions ?????
one thing we don't quiet understand is that the circuit wasn't working until Tom switch the capacitor on the opsite side. it lights up, but it does not like the diagram. also when we change the capastor from 1000 uF to 3300uF, the 3300 one works more effective and supply more energy.

next step:
1. masure how much voltage and amps we got from the solar cell
2. make it more efficent
a. pallarl the solar cell = gives more amps : 3v 20amps *2= 3v 40amps
b. extent the solar cell to the sun light.

3. make the 555 timer.
4. make the display design.

RANDOM : secreat tree project

Ji-Sun, Michael and I are working on SECREAT TREE. It's a tree that user can record their voice into the tree nobe and the tree will response via its flowers, and fruit. The LED lighting will corrosponse to users' volum intensity.

Ji-Sun is solder queen !!!

disscussion about solar & future goals

First part

Roger and I talked about how much time we spend on the mechenical struture and interge it into our idea. it's more like a from top to bottm idea development. We stuck on the structure, and not get into too far on the storage and masurments. this time, we both consider solar energy would be our main target and we would work hard on each detail. We would like to make a simple pummer works and elabrate it for more futures later.

this week:
1. place the order on all the parts we need for pummer ( ps. special thanks to Angela)
2. make appointment to Jeff to learn refresh the battery storage and the "decay."

next week
1. image application: lighting( how everything is gonna work)
2. read the Make article & diagram.

Multicrystaline Cells: the cell we bought is this kind
Monocrystalline Cells: it will be better to use this kind but it will be more expensive.

sustainable practices: week1 & 2& 3 thoughts

first week:

after the exciting discussion we had last week, I start to look for things that I can change at my place.
there are few things can be done this week.

1. ask landlord to fix the light that sometimes turns on when it shut down.
2. we are planing to purchase four LED light bulb to replace the regular light bulb in the comment area like kitchen, bathroom, living room and the foryer.
P.S. A LED light bulb is 30 times more than a regular bulb, but can last up to 10 years with 2 years warranty.
3. close the doors on the main entries to block the air and save more heat in the room.
4. maybe more.....

foodprint

second week:

1. landloard fixed the light and also fix the ring bell. (that's a plus)
2. haven't act on the LED bulbs purchasing!
3. we did practice it. We all thought each floor is so much warmer than before. maybe the next step is to masure it?!

third week: Masuring & quantify it !!!!!!!!

we thought about how can we "masure" the act (walking), the wast, the energy
everytime when I meet task that need a precise mesurment, I always found that it's really challenge to me to plan out and line up the task.

PROJECTS that I would like to touch on !!!

1. housing adjustment: working in progress...
2. MTA recycle: no recycle bin???? why and how they recycle?
3. unessary energy uses at ITP: a.not use the elevator to go down stairs b. turn off the unusing lab top

4. diary on sustainable practices !
5. daily life practices scatch (maybe a collabration with Hikaru ?)

expending video : what is performance video ??

perform stillness
I am interesting in the edge of the video / still image.
a video performance presents as a still photo.
a photo presents as a long time video.

Joshua and I performan the stillness.
the resulte was okay. we both move quiet a lot.

living art: rules

week4: making rules for people to follow

warning!!! the activity we will have in the next 1min is gonna be really challeng. please be prepare!!!

1. find a person who you like to play this game with.

2. sit on opposite side of him/her.

3. raise your right hand and point to him/her

4. please look for aichen's direction. (I will hold a clock and count down from 30)

5. start to laugh loud and hard and point to the person sit oppsite you for the next 30 second.

P.s. just saw a exhibition at Center for Architech
the peice Visual Echo gives a clear rule for user to participat in the work.

Finite State Machine: mirror mirror on the wall

week 1 :

shinyi and I are doing a collabration on a mirror project.
she thought about the behavior of people using the relfection on the building's window and the car window. the movement people intent to look at themself on the reflection to fix their wear their appearances. that movement is very intimate and it happens in that one second.

during the process we had some problems to pin down the idea. we finally started early this week with a acceptable idea to replace the screen that we intent to do so. that was fun to hang out with many groups of people and work late night with some support from each other. it's quiet interesting how everything pan out quiet nicely.

here are some documentation and some other projects.

motor + motion= energy ????

Roger and I continue our idea on the bathroom light project. This week we focus on building a device that could take the "work" from opening the bathroom door to light up a LED. We have a motor and wonder what kind of the mechanical structure would work for this particular motion.

First meeting:
we wanna take the principle of retractable measuring tape to rewind back the twin after every use.
so we opened one of Roger's Tape measures. here is his measuring tape. we studied how the spring work inside of the plastic case. However, after we put everything back into the place, the tap measure couldn't retracte back to the case.
*here is the picture of it ..
IMG_5036.jpg

we thought the one we open up is too cheap. that's why it would't work after we open it up. So we try to open another one. the second one is quiet nice. it got a much longer spring inside.
IMG_5039.jpg

* but after we took it apart, it explored !!!!!!!!!!!

IMG_5041.jpg

Second meeting:

*then we thought about Anglea and Megon's salad spinner. it got a auto retractable format. Roger and Yao got the spinner and we are all excited about it. we made two holes to grap the motor from spinner. somehow we broke the structure of the spinner. the spring doesn't retract back to the case.
:(
IMG_5045.jpg

Third meeting:
we try to build a prototype and study the motion closely and found out the motor we use can only go one direction, which will be hard for us to rewind back to the motor.
