What?
A mobile cell-phone peripheral that reacts to SMS message content. Wireless communication between cell-phone and peripheral via bluetooth. Peripheral will contain colored LEDs, vibrating mechanism, battery source in addition to wireless device.
How?
A java midlet on the cell-phone will intercept any received SMS. The midlet will then determine key words and send relevant commands to the peripheral via bluetooth.
The peripheral will receive commands from the user's cell-phone and light various colored LEDs according to the SMS content (as parsed by the midlet).
Our project will deal with select issues surrounding abstracted, bastardized networked communication SMS and text-messaging. We have found that text-message based communication lacks a certain degree of humanity an analog. The conversion of a robust language to text filters out many necessary and valued expressions present in communication.
Our project adds another layer of complexity of feedback. This layer is even more expressive, addressing the primal issue of color recognition. Even more, the subjectivity our project allows makes for more interesting, and therefor more effective communication.
