I want to make a bookmarklet that will rewrite New York Times articles with user comments (from that article).

I’ve played around with manually composing a new article made from of comments and pooped them out to the browser. I’m really excited with what I can do based on these quick and dirty prototypes. I’m thinking of weighing the randomness of the comments with certain fields such as recommendations, editor pick, or unapproved. I can imagine an article composed of hate speech and spam, as well as really insightful and crowd sourced articles that provide first hand accounts of times topics.

!! I updated this assignment after getting way closer to the original idea. Find the updated code on github, and scroll to the bottom of this post to see the final outcome.

Here is the link to the code on github.

For my midterm, I wanted to improve upon the last assignment and make use of regular expressions to replace every alphanumeric character in a new york times article, save for the terms in the article headline. I then started exploring other ideas and moved forward from there. What if I created a dynamic engine that could read the RSS feed of New York Times articles on the home page, find the body of each article and erase all the words leaving only a graphic picture of that article composed of punctuation and white space? Would it be interesting to see the punctuation maps of each article side by side? What if I take each punctual mark as an anchor point of interest and look at the two words surrounded by the punctuation?

A lot of this idea came from a prototype for thesis, as I think some words would be useful for the visualization of an article’s “bone structure” as a living organism. Since a visual/graphic representation of the article is what I’m after, it makes sense that the punctuation of an article would be interesting to explore. In this sense, I’m not really looking into the meaning of the words that compose the article, but instead, the physical and graphic elements that are produced as artifacts when an article is dissected and disemboweled. Below is the documentation of how I explored these ideas.

The first step was to remove the words that didn’t appear in the headline and only include punctuation. With Adam’s help, I used regex to accomplish this task. This line of code will look for every alphanumeric character and replace it with a space. This way, I can conserve the white space of the article. This produced beautiful results, as you can see here.

Getting to this point took a lot of debugging. When I tried created a list of “safe words” that appeared in the headline, my program would make several lists of lists making it impossible to call on just those words in the list once. This is what I was getting:

I continued to work on my regex pattern making, and after hours of debugging, I finally wrote a line of code that would return the word appearing before and after any punctuation in the article. It wasn’t as interesting as I had hoped, at least with the Ikea article, as it is really only picking up periods, commas, and one quotation. After trying to account for the various hyphens in the article, I ended up getting more errors that involved either spitting out only punctuation, or every word in one line.

The real part I got stuck on here was how to combine these regex operation in the same for loop. What’s confusing me here is the fact that one expression is for substitution while the other is a findall.

Next, I decided to tackle the html parsing. For the URL handling of this midterm, I looked at several libraries to complete the task. First, I tried using the urllib2 lib ray. It’s a python module for fetching URLs with a simple interface in the form of a “urlopen function. Supposedly, it’s as simple as importing the library, directing the script to “respond” to a designated URL, and read it. The function does this by making a request object which represent the http request you’re making, returning a response object that you can call “.read” on.

After failing at getting the urllib2 library working, I started working with the Beautiful Soup library which uses an html parser (I chose to download the html5lib as it is apparently an extremely lenient parser that works like a web browser). After so much difficulty trying to accomplish this part, and lack of internet connection where I was staying in Austin and the flight, I decided to drop this part of the project and continue working with the hard coded text.

So this is where I’m at – three different articles broken down to their “bone structure.” Punctuation and white space. This is most definitely a work in progress, while I still really want to solve all the aforementioned problems. I think the project would be much more interesting to see them in action.

After creating two functions that iterate over triples of words and then identify the match that I’m looking for in order to replace words with space, I end up with a result that is consistent of punctuation marks and the words around it to give the appropriate context.
meat

horse

alessandra$

I’m using the adj_extractor example and the alpha_replace example to do the assignment. First I put together a list of words that I want to include in the final output (this I decided would be the words that appear in the headline of the article).

Then, using the list comprehension from the example, I split the input by spaces (so I’m looking at just words) and compare that input with my provided words. This is the poem that it returns:

Ikea Withdraws Meatballs After Horse Meat Is Found
horse meat
meatballs
after
horse meat Ikea
horse Ikea
meatballs
found
horse Ikea
meatballs
Ikea’s Ikea’s
after
meat
is
meat
horse

The next step is to look for and print all the punctuation that exists in the article. First I made another text document with a list of punctation. Then, if the program detects that there is a word to look at, it will find out if it has punctuation attached to it by looking at the word[-1] (this finds the last character of that word. Since I split up all the words by spaces, if there are any punctuation marks it will exist at the end of the word.

While debugging I got some cool visual results:

I took a really cheesy poem I found online about pirates, and used our class cowboy example to replace some of the words with terminology associated with Somalian piracy.

Make sure to visit the original poem’s website for the full experience (turn up your volume).

New Poem:

Like a ghost on the wind
He comes from the sea,
And trembles the foe
Like a storm on the lee.
With swashbuckling currency-counting machines
And a Jolly Roger laugh,
He sails the Maritime Security Patrol Area
On his exploited marine stock’s behalf
He has a black-patched Kalashnikov
And a diamond ring in his ear,
And on his wind-burned face,
A crusty-grizzled beard.
With a bone-cold glare
And a sneer on his lip,
He has a semi-automatic pistol by his side
And a hand grenade in his grip.
With a thunderous blast
From his AK47′s might,
He shivers the hostages
And cripples their fight.
He takes what he’s hijaked
And turns it to millions of dollars,
For He’s crafty and shrewd
And He’s fearless and a brawler,
He’s dashing and daring,
A fierce burcad badeed*,
For the sight of his plunder
Pales many with fear.
From Norther Somalia
Victories are told
Of the Spirit of the Pirate
And the Gulf of Aden’s toll

*burcad badeed means “ocean robber” and is the typical Somali term for “pirate”

Old Poem:

Like a ghost on the wind
He comes from the sea,
And trembles the foe
Like a storm on the lee.

With swashbuckling swagger
And a Jolly Roger laugh,
He flies the black flag
On a whalebone staff.

He has a black-patched eye
And a ring in his ear,
And on his wind-burned face,
A crusty-grizzled beard.

With a bone-cold glare
And a sneer on his lip,
He has a cannon by his side
And a cutlass in his grip.

With a thunderous blast
From his cannon’s might,
He shivers the strong
And cripples their fight.

He takes what he’s lost
And turns it to gold,
For He’s crafty and shrewd
And He’s fearless and bold.

He’s dashing and daring,
A fierce buccaneer,
For the sight of his plunder
Pales many with fear.

From East Carolina
Victories are told
Of the Spirit of the Pirate
And his purple and gold!

We’re discarding the helmet idea for now, and focusing on the other element that we had conceived of earlier and making it into a series: the spear antenna. We want to make a series of hand-crafted and digitally fabricated spears that reflect neighborhood personalities in New York. So far we’re envisioning a Midtown Spear, an East Village Spear, a Williamsburg Spear, and maybe a Coney Island Spear, as if these neighborhoods are tribes.

In addition to being weapons (for self-defense and hunting) the spears would have other functionalities as well. One will be equipped with a wifi antenna (Super USB WiFi Antenna 3 – High Power Long Range 802.11 B G N Wireless $99), the other a flask of whiskey (as a medicinal tool), maybe another one has other medicinal products, maybe another one has a more high-tech function – these are the things we’re still brainstorming on.

Our product deposits itself as a retail concept that is part of an emerging interest in survival gear marrying contemporary technologies, one that is specifically catered toward a metropolitan New York audience. There are examples of this as a successful retail model, found in products such as Best Made Co.’s urban axe line, or even in fashion oriented, jewelled derringer revolvers for women.

Also, there is a development in accessory objects under way, further enriching and driving our narrative for offering such a novel design to public consumption. I (Jason) am building a flotation vestdress for downtown women in flooding conditions, as well as a brownstone/limestone/brick urban digital cammo print for fabric.

The midtown spear will be composed of several 3d printed buildings. Here are some pictures of those buildings in google sketchup.

UPDATES AS OF 12/5:

We are currently 3D printing at AMS, continuing to work on the flotation vest, and have ordered all materials for both spears.

After so much turmoil at AMS (over 2 days) we finally have printable files. From google sketchup pro, we had to open them up in cinema 4D, optimize them, then transfer them to zbrush where many edits had to be done. We’ve made holes in the models so we can insert our walnut dowel, and we’ve divided the topologies to render them a little deformed. We’re still working with scaling, which is a nightmare in zbrush, and then we have to pick the output material.

After that, we’ll have to lathe the wood down to make rabbit joint, and adhere with epoxy. If we decide to treat the wood with a stain, oil, or wax, we’ll probably end up doing that first.

Then we might decorate it a little with some sinew thread.

We won’t have time for this, but before the show we want to house it in a wooden crate with veneer labels that say something different than “FRAGILE” but along that same vein. We’ll line it with wool felt.

Sarah and I are working together for our printing code final. I’m excited to work with someone else mainly because we’ve all been working solo this semester and I think it would be nice to do something different, both in execution but also in process. I would like to tackle a more complicated idea, exploring color, pattern, textures, and text.

A lot of our work so far has had to do with science fiction, space, or outer-spacial travel, so we’re sticking with that theme. Sarah had the idea of working with NASA, and then discovered that they will be having a big announcement in December about something in the soil (spooky). Although at first we were brainstorming about doing a series involving the different departments in NASA, highlighting all the important developments that they work on, we think that starting small with one specific event would be much easier to design for and tackle programmatically.

Our explorations first began with the National Travel Bureau’s posters from the 50s. Sarah introduced me to these incredible posters which use HAND DRAWN text (super cool) and beautiful colors.

I’ve been collecting inspiration from around the internet and it seems so appropriate for this brainstorm we’re having.
What I really like about this one is the amount of graphic elements on the page. there’s text that doesn’t seem to be ordered in any grid system on the page, colors, and shapes. I love the pointillism effect that whitewashes the colors

The effect of accumulation of all these points are really apparent in these posters which are mesmerizing and I think remind me of galaxies and nebulas

The artist references them as rhythm studies, and I think this inspiration will be great for next session’s class on motion. Check these out, which remind me of wind maps.

On the other hand, this totally organic shape out of a sketchbook really compels me:

Another example of fluidity and organic shapes:

After looking at a lot of these examples, we started thinking about distortion and the idea occurred to us that we could manually distort any generative sketch that we print. We were inspired by these posters that seem to make use of this technique, whether they were made with a photocopy machine or not:

The world is unreliable. After Hurricane Sandy ravaged the northeastern coast of the United States, millions of people were left without power in New York City. The blackout was challenging for urban city dwellers not accustomed to darkness and utter silence. Beacon is a light source that can be used singularly or in pairs. Part flash light, part camp fire in an urban environment, Beacon helps those without city lights or electricity to find their way individually, or gather collective warmth in pairs, or groups.

Beacon performs as a constellation looking forward for solutions or new territories, but also serves as a reminder us of where we come from in our collective search for being illuminated, and joining together for safety. The beacon seeks to be useful as an everyday passive object but urgently practical and deployable in three distinct ways.

I’m working with Jason on this project, so we will each be constructing our own “sides” of the Beacon. While I’m working on some sketches, I have a clear idea of the aesthetic and materials that I want to work with.

For our midterm (which is delayed due to Hurricane Sandy) my group is supposed to create an interactive data representation of the U.S. election system. After brainstorming a couple of nights, we decided on the issue of wait times at the poll. To make a statement about the ridiculousness of the problem, we decided to make a ridiculous sketch, to comment on the absurdity of the problem.

The waiting game is a data visualization representing the waiting lines at the polls during the 2012 Presidential Elections. A program collected tweets containing word that suggest waiting times to vote. Based on those tweets, we calculated averages for waiting times in the states where data was available. After the user selects a state to vote in, George Washington travels along the path in the sketch with a speed determined by that state’s average waiting time. When he finishes the line, his vote is cast.

This is a screen shot of what the sketch is looking like right now:

Here’s what will happen after you wait the 1-6 hours it will take you to vote:

This is how I organized the states in the blue box:

Here’s a GIF that we’re using for now. If copyright issues ensue, we’re working on our very own George Washington alternative inspired by Andy Rash’s 8 Bit GOP candidates you can see .

Here’s ours:
