I was interested in seeing if music, and specifically rap music, had an effect on my everyday speech. If there were unique words that I used that came from my listening to hip-hop.
The Black Album by Jay-z is one that i remember listening to a lot when it forst came out and still listen to from time to time. I started by aggregating the lyrics to all the songs on The Black Album from Rap genius, cleaning it up and doing a word count on it to see what the most said words on this album were and if they were a part of my vocabulary.
The results were underwhelming, I think for a few reasons.
-Jay-Z is unique in that he is very diverse lyrically. He does not repeat words often.
-I only analyzed 1 album. I’m curious if the results would be different if I have analyzed his complete discography.
-The Black Album was released in 2003 and too much time has passed for this experiment to be effective.
I would be interested in trying a few more approaches.
-Analyze a current album I am listening to
-Analyze Jay-Z’s complete discography
-Analyze someone other than Jay-Z
