Playing empathy is a system that operates by taking controversial data from different sources and asks the user to establish comparisons in playful ways. In this case, I am showing an installation comprised by two television sets. One of the TVs displays live programming from Venezolana de Television (VTV), the Venezuelan government-ruled TV broadcast. The other unit shows live programming from Globovisión, the private opposition broadcast company. Both TVs are separated by a sign that says FIND 10 DIFFERENCES. On one side, Venezolana de Television builds its speech in favor of the policies and actions of the current government, while the other channel broadcasts the opposite, the antithesis to any gesture performed by Hugo Chávez, the former president of Venezuela who just passed away.
This notion can be applied in many different ways with a broad range of topics:
Republicans vs. Democrats.
Creationism vs. Darwinism.
Abortion vs. Pro-choice.
Facebook vs. No Facebook.
Capitalism vs. Socialism
And so on…
