proposal and scenario
objective: provide ambient
lighting that can "delight" the user
context: it's a decorative piece -- could
be in a public or private space, in a trafficked area, such as a lobby
or hallway
users: passers-by
design criteria: since this lamp isn't
a necessity, it should be aesthetically pleasing, and be a source of "delight",
and hopeully not too annoying
solution: ...some basic
sketches
Flower is made of petals in a simple geometric pattern. It would have
some cutout pattern, or transluscency, so the light patterns would change
depending on how the pieces overlap.
Flower would open and close based on either
1) proximity of user (the closer the user, the more it opens) or
2) light level (using photo sensor). The darker out, the brighter the
light is.
The 2 possible inputs are
1) whether or not there is a user, and his/her proximity
2) light level.
The 2 outputs we can vary for its bloom 2) physical position
of the petals 2) brightness of the light.
Each petal would be attached to a motor w/ simple mechanism to translate
rotational motion to linear motion to mimic the flower opening and closing.
The entire structure might be mounted on a platform that would rotate.
This is mainly a "visual" experience. Although
there is no sound to it, there will be the aural experience of hearing
the motor turn and the part move.
Ideally, there would be multiiple lights lining the wall.
