PhysComp Week2: Assignment– Potentiometer and LEDs

September 23rd, 2009 dchayes No comments

So, last week I couldn’t figure out why my simple little circuit wasn’t lighting my LED. I was feeling silly– am I cut out for ITP? So, I tried a few more shots. Finally, I raised my hand (made an appointment with one of the awesome resident researchers- Chris) and set up a one-to-one gathering today. The simple problem was one that I have a feeling will haunt me for some time to come: I had my power and ground wires from the Arduino connected to the breadboard instead of the bus. So, no power was flowing directly between them.

What I am realizing in my third week in the loft is that I really have to work at my own pace. For me, that means consistently and moderately. I can’t be too concerned with how cool and fast my peers are making things. I mean, I am interested in what they are doing, but in order to really learn here, I must stick to learning in my own way.

I’ll post a link to the video from Blip.tv shortly.

Here is a picture of the set up with all cords where they should be:

I have to say, the resident researchers have been a tremendous resource. Chris has to be one of the most patient guys I have ever met. I was feeling a bit insecure about not being able to get what I am sure is basic to work, but he put it in perspective. PhysComp is fun again. ; -D

Day Two Week 1

September 10th, 2009 dchayes No comments

Again, I am late posting… but I am on WP.org now! (I still love you WP.com). It took longer than it should have to switch over, mostly because I should have taken a nap. I don’t do well when I am hungry and/or tired.

I hadn’t used Fetch in a long time, which meant either using Cyberduck to upload WP on my ITP server space or biting the bullet and purchasing Fetch. At least I have 14 more days to decide. My general rule is that if it is free, it is for me. ; -D

Other than that, the upload was pretty smooth. I didn’t have much to import, so that helped. One thing I don’t like on WP.org is that the url doesn’t display the title post, but an id for the post number, such as post=7. It makes for an unattractive link if I want to share it. My WP.com account gave me a clean link, but it could be a template issue.

I now present more pics. They will get better. Soon. and timely.

Day One Week 1

Technically, it is day two, as of the date and time of this post, but these photos are from the first day of classes at ITP, so there you have it.

My first and only course of the day was Applications of Interactive Telecommunications, also known as Red’s Class. I enjoyed it, and I am looking forward to hearing more guest speakers. Unfortunately, I took pretty poor video of the first guest , so it is not included in this post.
