I visited NYU’s Palladium Gym in order to take pictures of various moving parts on the workout equipment.
As expected, there were a variety of components that helped in the movement of the heavy weights. I found bearings / bushings on just about every machine in the place since they all required something to rotate.
This was a pulley system used by the machine to facilitate lifting.
I found this to be particularly interesting. This is where the resistance was set on this particular machine. It is not the weight that is moved, rather how easy it is to move that weight (though I did not actually try it). It has a rather nice torsion spring, and the teeth serve to keep it in a specific place.
I didn’t stay very long at the Gym because it was rather crowded, and I received a few strange looks as I wandered about in street clothes with my phone taking pictures. I did notice that all of the things we discussed in class about “the guts” of mechansims are employed by exercise equipment companies in order to provide function to their machines.

Perfect! Nice pictures and observations – I’m curious about that torsion spring machine, I don’t think I’ve seen that before.
