TEMPER TEXT

What it is:

TemperText is a text messaging system where users can record the frequency, intensity, and the result of their anger or frustration. To begin, the user has to set up an account for themselves online. Then, they can text the system anytime with the word "angry". The system responds by asking "on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being strongest, what is the level of your anger?" The user responds with their level. The system asks them what other word they might describe their anger with (frustration, irritation), and the user responds to that. Then it asks 2 more questions: how they reacted and how people responded to their reaction (whether it was positive or negative).

The information is logged and the user can check it later to see their results, or possibly to see their results in comparison with other users.

The system may also text them a day afterwards to ask again if they considered the response to their reaction positive or negative, since they may have a different answer once they have calmed down a little.

Using text messaging for this project is ideal because: 1) it is private, so it can be used in a very public space, 2) it should be calming, since it is a 'time out' when the user has to slow down, and 3) it's a good way to reach young adults who may be at the early stages of an anger management problem.

It has been developed in a way that addresses some major problems of anger management: 1) people aren't aware how frequently they get angry, 2) people get 'irritated' or 'frustrated' but may not be willing to see that as fitting in the same category as anger, and 3) people often make the mistaken assumption that their anger is helpful more often than it is unhelpful.
