Electric Light,Dead Light

This reading struck me in its opposition to the current assignment. The class was assigned to create a light sculpture that reflected the styles of certain “isms.”This seemed to be a simple design problem. I looked for inspiration from the graphic arts and sculpture of constructivism. It seems to me,the struggle was to focus on light as our medium, and not the objects that created, encased,or reflected it. This is difficult, because many of the examples I looked at were definitely objects. Zdeněk Pešánek was very much a pioneer in the field. Today his pieces are almost common place in the art world, but at the time they were considered “low art”. He seemed to have created very interesting experiences through his work, which seems most valuable when working with experiences over time. It’s unfortunate that his work was not preserved.
