Andi Cheung and I became interested in Maru the cat. He is a famous internet cat. His primary interests include boxes. For a a portait assignment in video sculpture,Andi and I chose him as our subject. Honestly,it seems the viewer (user?) is really the subject of our portrait. Maru has 141,603,796 total views on YouTube.
After setting up a projection of a cat in a box,it was easy to see why.
The project was a really fun foray into projection mapping. Also, projection mapping is hard.
At the completion of this exercise, all points seem to point to scale. We want to express the weird scale of this cat’s online popularity. It is inane,it is counter productive, yet,Maru is still awesome.
So if you were wondering what a projection of a cat in a box looks like projected into a box…This one’s for you.
We compiled clips of Maru from YouTube with similar viewpoints and actions to create this video, which was looped in our presentation.
