StefanieJ O U R N A L - G R O U P 2 http://itp.nyu.edu/~sw1146/pcomp/photos3/index.html Tuesday, Oct 11 On our first meeting Patricia, Justin and me had a dazzling number of ideas. Since we come from quite different backgrounds we tried to share our observations first to find out what would be our common interest. We decided it was the use and perception of TV and how people change their social behavior as soon as there is a TV in the same room. We were also discussing the impact TV news has on our opinion and what is going to be published. Who broadcasts and with which intention? Why is Television so integrated in our (family) lives? How could we make the "viewer" aware of the fact, that he/she could also become a "user" of TV? In the end of the meeting we tried to find a way to manipulate an old TV set and attach sensors to it. The next meetings where focused on how we could improve the interaction between viewer and a sensor-embedded TV. Not only the physical action and reaction, but also the content we want to suggest with our project were subject of our discussions. We found out that we were running out of time and took the decision to split the interaction we were intending to implement to two basic functions. First of all the changing of screen color depending on the chosen TV channel. This function deals with political subjectivity and how certain shows consciously try to fake objectivity. The other interaction is basically measuring the sound volume to trigger a voice chip. The voice chip will be programmed with comments that will make the TV seem to talk. While working in the team we have found out that people interact very differently with their TV depending on the culture and region they live in. In Brazil the TV has a different "role" then in Austria for example. We will try to do more research on the consequences this specific behavior has on each different society and concentrate on the realization of our two functions. http://itp.nyu.edu/~sw1146/pcomp/photos1/index.html _______ Saturday, Oct 14 We started trying to make the sound sensor part. We tried some different kinds of microphones, but it 's not working yet. We found out that we need a amplifier. We also broke the TV apart. _______ Sunday Oct 15 Meeting and thinking and working without so much output. _______ Monday 16 We got the sound and microphone working and wrote the code for their interaction. Justin had made an amplifyer and a voice chip with an ISD voiceship. In the morning we made the servo motor work. We will use it to turn the volume low and high "manually". _______ Tuesday 17 Justin and Patricia were working on the code. We also tried to put an electro magnet on the top of the TV to disturb the picture as a warning before the TV starts talking. Unfortunatly our TV has a good shell and didn't react on the electro magnet. _______ Wednesday 18 Patricia installed a "clock" now in Arduino, which counts the milliseconds to trigger the delay of the motor for avoiding its noise. We hacked into the switch between Audio and Video Input to make a switch outside the TV. There are two relays to substitue the switch that Justin hacked into, but they are not working yet, . Now as soon as the microphone receives sound input the servomotor moves, which will turn the volume down and make the sound chip talk. |
