## Color Composition

December 13th, 2012

I got terrible score in color hue test, very very sad.

About a month ago, I found interesting logic to make shape during doing ICM assignment. I tried arranging the texts in spiral form, but what I got was this weird pattern . Hm, looks interesting.

I adjusted some variables, and tried connecting the dots and add some brightness change for each line.

Wooh, looks good, I am not sure it can be called as a composition though.. then time to play with color.  I added variable for hue value, it starts from 0 and specific value is added to value every frame.

For this case, I only changed the bright value.

Time to change saturation, I didn’t know what ‘saturation’ exactly means, but this sketch shows what it is to me!

Here are some sketches that I could get by changing the values in sketch. Oh, fun!

Code is super simple, so I just wanna paste the code in here.

float a = 0;
float d = 3;
float c = 0;

float arcLength = 0;
float w;
void setup() {

size(800, 600);
colorMode(HSB);
frameRate(20);

background(0);

}
void draw() {

//textFont(font);
//w = textWidth(‘a’);
w = 9.8;// ->hexagon!!!
arcLength +=w/2;
float theta = PI + arcLength/d;
a += theta/100;
d+=5.8;

strokeWeight(5);
// stroke(0,255,255); //
stroke(color(c,100,200));
// stroke(c);
line(width/2+d*cos(a), height/2+d*sin(a),width/2+(d+5)*cos(a+theta), height/2+(d+5)*sin(a+theta));
c+=1.49;

}

## NameCard

November 28th, 2012

When we get namecards, we usually get bunch of them (from our wintershow, or other kinds of social events..) I thought that it would be good if I can make something that can keep others’ namecards, but also can be my namecard at the same time.

This is my result.

Another idea.. a bit more practical

## Font Design

Expressive Word

I spent whole my life in Korea before arriving in here, and we use whole different alphabet(Hangul) for our language. I just wanted my classmates to taste the beauty of typo in other languages than English alphabet, so I made simple web app which returns the name of classmates in Hangul. Link  : http://itp.nyu.edu/~hj657/sinatra/week2assignment/

This week’s assignment is to find some bad signages. I didn’t have to go far to find bad ones, there are really lots of grosses near me.

1. coins

I cannot believe that dime is smaller than 5 cents, also all coins don’t have any real number on them. MOREOVER, they have different kinds of pictures on even same kind of the coin.  I really believe that people can save about 1 minute a day to count their coins if they have arranged rule for coins.

2. Bus stop

This bus stop sign is not that visible, that is one problem,  besides this doesn’t show many things about bus. Where do the bus go to? This stop tells the directions, but for me, it seems to be impossible just to hop on the bus without detailed plans.

This is korean bus stop sign. It shows all the stops that the bus stops by. This sign enables people not to remember all bus paths. More amazing thing is that litte red arrow. There used to be same bus path map regardless of the direction, but an awesome guy started to put that little arrow to point the direction of the bus. What a good sign!

3. ITP Room Number signage

I spend about 12 hours on ITP floor, I don’t know where the room 20 is though… They are not noticeable at all !

4. ITP Locker

I hesitated to choose the locker, I had lots of problems with the locker but I am not sure that same things are also happening to others. ( It is possible that just because I am such an idiot… anyway, good signs can help idiots maybe?) First, previous owner didn’t clear up the locker, there were so many stuffs inside, so I had to wait about 2 weeks. Now, I sometimes keep trying to unlock the locker which is not mine. On halloween party day, strap of my backpack was stuck inside of the locker right under mine. I wanted to go home but I couldn’t take my backpack! Amik suggested me to cut the lock, but I cut my strap instead. Then, I thought that it would be better to have names on the locker.

I tried to find the person of locker under mine.. but my pathetic try failed.

Therefore, I thought new way of labeling our lockers. I am not sure this is the best way, and I am also worried about ruining people’s joy to customize their lockers. That’s why I tried to make this new sign variable (such as fonts, size or color..)

new way!

## Over the Decades, How States Have Shifted _ Design Analysis

November 7th, 2012

I choose the infographic of New York Times. You can fully enjoy this amazing thing at http://goo.gl/QwuVm.

I choose this one because it is telling a great story. To be honest, I am not that interested in american politics, I just feel that it is the story from far away. However, this graphic makes me curious about american political history and people. What happened? What made this change? Also, this graphic has a lot of information. It is showing who was winner, how poll has changed in each states, and how many electoral votes they have. In spite of this bunch of information, there is no mess!

In terms of color,  I was a bit confused at first time, because red always stand for lefty in my country. It seems that t these colors clearly point to each party in this country.

They are of course using grid system, and it is applied to text part. Perhaps that is why it looks neat.

Only two fonts were used in this graphic. I think better font can be chosen for title, but san-serif font for contents seems to be a good choice.
