Daily Uses
I had to split this up into several dyas worth of observation.
Here are the results for the morning commute at around 11am.
On the way to the Subway:
4 Cell phones all individual users; 1 remotely operated car door opener; 1 CD player
At the Station: 6 Metro Card users; 1 MetroCard Vending Machine User
On the Train: 6 iPod users, 5 Cell/PDA fiddlers, 1 digital camera
On the walk to Tisch building: 22 Cellphones, 13 iPods, 1 Digital Camera, 4 ATM card swipes
@ Tisch Building: 10 Cells, 10 people waiting for the elevator, 8 iPods
So Prospect Heights is pretty quiet in the late morning no surprise there! Taking note of everyone else's connectivity did create a certain alienation effect. The majority of the interactions were performed by single users and those that did involve a modicum of social interaction were financial transactions between strangers. I found very few frustrasted users out there. From the guy scrolling through his vacation pictures to the woman scrolling through multiple menus in order to play music through her tiny phone, people seemed to be communing with their machines intuitively.
