the Fantasy Musical Instrument:

In Washington Square Park, one of the well known of New York City’s public park, when people walk around the park, they easily can watch the music performance by musicians. The performance is enough awesome to attract an attention of people, but there is no interaction between audience and musicians. Just, audience should stand and appreciate the music without a participation in the performance. Of course, afterward the performance, people can talk with musicians. It is not real time interaction. In the twenty-one century, human want to interact with and connect to every contexts. Consequently, my team thought the fact how audiences interact with the music. My team’s project name is “Making a musical instrument interact with people”. This is to provide people with new experience how they are able to involve in the music show.

the Concept of Design

When a musician plays the musical instrument embed digital sensors that react on vibration, temperature, and movement. These sensors produce the numbers and send them to computer that visualizes digital signals and then, visualized data is to be projected on a big screen. In real time, the big screen shows visualization of data generated by the music performance.  Also, audiences can interact with this performance by other digital sensors set up close to audiences. People can watch their involvement into this media show through the big screen that reflects on how much audiences interact with the musicians.

This is a prototype to make a musical instrument talk. We utilized several sensors: a pressure sensor, an ultrasonic sensor to sense musician’s movement. Each sensor produces numbers and sends them to a computer for visualization. Afterward, visualized data is to be projected on the screen.

This prototype will be more simplified; it has a wireless networking system with a sensor for a musical instrument and a computer.

This shows how a data becomes visualization by Max/Msp/Jitter. The data gets from sensors for a musical instrument and sensors for audiences. According to number, the visualization can be changed. It will be projected on a big screen. Audiences not only appreciate the music performance but also watch how they interact with musician.
