For the networked pong I decided to build paper pop-up controls.
First I tried the code with an accelerometer. The main difficulty was to work with the ArduinoMini for first time. I found this page very helpful for the setup, and after a couple of unsuccessful attempts I realize that I had to change the chip in the Arduino software from atmega8 to atmega168.

For the pop-ups I used two simple switches

I don't have the IP address for my XPort yet, but the hardware setup seems to be working and ready for configuration.
My main difficulty with the physical setup was a confusion about the order of the pins.. apparently I put the board backwards and I have to "mirror" the diagram...
The class ends with an interesting discussion about ambient devices.
To the question about why there are some many unsuccessful attempts to design an "intimacy at distance" device some one answered talking about facebook, and the whole talk went around social networks for a while.
That's curious because "intimacy" would be the last word that i would use to talk about facebook.
Social networks are about make public your relationships and for me completely opposed to the idea of trying to simulate or at lest represent some ones presence.
I'm not sure if can be described as successful, but I find definitely interesting some projects about tele-presence. Specially the work of Stefan Agamanolis at the distant lab. I remembered that one of his project, Habitat was one of the first projects that i find inspiring and that made me be interested in physical computing a long time ago.

Also talking about "physical" visualizations...

For my first assignment I use a 3-axis accelerometer to build a kind of drawing tool. The application in processing react to the changes on the sensor generating more graphic elements and and changing its color and scale accordingly with the velocity in the 3 axis. The change in the speed of movement in the Z-axis also controls the rate of the sound.
The graphic interface is an implementation of Craig Reynolds flocking behaviour.
