Making Pop-Up Books
Wednesdays 9:30-12:00 Instructor: Marianne R.Petit
This 2-point workshop covers the basics of paper engineering techniques (including folds (symmetrical, asymmetrical, parallel and angle), generations, floating layers, v cuts, dials, and pull tabs) to make movable designs that pop that can be incorporated into your other work. Each week new techniques will be demonstrated in class, with in-class lab/work time for students. Weekly production assignments, writing assignments as well as a final project. All projects are to be documented on student blogs.
Grading is based on successful completion of all weekly assignments, class webjournals, class participation and attendance.
Students should bring to each class the following: paper, scissors, x-acto knife, ruler, bone folder, glue stick, cutting mat

- Assignment:
- Select a commercially available pop-up book. Analyze the book on a page by page basis -- what mechanisms and techniques are being used? How are they being combined? Write evaluation to your site. Bring books to class on 3/7 and be prepared to discuss and present.
- Also, begin planning your final project. Post storyboard, sketches, and preliminary construction. Be prepared to present in class.
- Continue work on Final Book Project
