Group 2's Project: Strawberry Fields, Imagine Mosaic Area

Nanna -

The first thing I noticed about Strawberry Fields was what a peaceful place it is. People there looked genuinely relaxed. Upon observation it seemed to me that people had come there for various reasons. Some were taking a break, others had come to see a significant historical spot, and others just merely passed by. The pictures below sort out ways in which I observed people were taking use of the space...

"Strawberry Fields" sounded peaceful and special to me. It sounds like it's a very special spot like well-organized garden in Central Park. It was beautiful. I tried to catch the atmosphere: beautiful weather, trees, people hanging out....etc.

But that was just like what you could see in a park. If I did not know the stories about Strawberryfield, I would have just passed by that place. But the story of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, which is invisible, keeps people coming there and changes its appearence. They visit the historical place, take pictures, listen to a tourguide and sometimes just stand there for a moment as people do in front of St.Peter's of Rome.

I'm glad we chose the area around the 'Imagine' mosiac. It is a emotional and historical place. I agree with Nanna, people seemed to be there for a number of reasons: see the mosiac/pay tribute (saw a couple people with guitars, though they weren't playing them), meet friends, relax, eat lunch (we went around lunch time), and others were on tours. Most seemed happy to sit on the benches and take it all in. A few were napping.

I also noticed the peaceful state around the mosiac. Aside from the noise from Central Park West, it was pretty quiet. People seemed pretty respectful of others and their reasons for being there.

There were protective barricades around the mosiac because it is damaged by people walking on it. At first I thought it was a detriment to the feeling of the place. Then I noticed people leaning on the barricade, taking photos, and chatting with one another. It seemed those barricades allow people to spend more time closer to the mosiac.

I've heard that there is a huge vigil around the mosiac on the anniversary of when John Lennon got shot. I would like to see that now, having been there when it was so quiet.

I lived on West 71 Street when John Lennon was shot. I remember when Yoko Ono donated money to build Strawberry Field. I just like being there because of its beauty, and the people who occupy the place. It was enjoyable sharing this peaceful space with Jadie, Nanna, and Chris.
