Some Reflections on Ong’s Orality and Literacy

The focus of Ong’s text – that the modes of thought of which we are capable are conditioned by the methods whereby our thoughts are able to be expressed and rehearsed socially, and thus by the material constraints of their expression and reception – sheds quite a broad light on the history of culture and immediately suggests itself to a range of further research programs (and is all the more striking in light of its commnonsensicality in hindsight).  In addition to furnishing explanations for some of the structural and thematic differences between modern and traditional language use and culture, it serves as a handy starting point for the investigation of a number of more delimited metacultural trends concerning the pace and character of culture’s evolution.
