An Easy Experiment with amber

Take a piece of amber rub it vigourously with a piece of wool or flannel. It know will pick up objects, like small pieces of paper, dry grass, lint, or a feather. Wait a moment and the object will fall off and be repelled from the amber.

When the amber is rubbed, electrons are transfered from the wool or flannel to the amber, which becomes negatively charged. This negative charge attracts the piece of paper until electrons have moved to it and it too becomes negatively charged. Since like charges repel the paper is now repelled from the amber.
