Need: a clean, dry glass or jar 2 sheets of aluminum foil a plastic comb 10 paperclips an electrophorus (see electrophorus experiment)Insert one sheet of aluminum foil into the glass, pushing it to the sides so that it tightly lines the inside about 3/4 way to the top. Wrap the other sheet of aluminum foil around the outside of the glass. Place the comb over the top of the glass. Chain 9 paperclips together insert the top one over a tooth of the comb and let the paperclips dangle to the bottom of the glass. Only one paperclip needs to be resting on the bottom.
Using the electrophorus, you can now charge the Jar. Bring the charged disck of the electrophorus near the clip on the comb. A spark will jump to the clip. Repeat this several times.
To release the charge: open the extra paperclip into a bent wire. Place one end so that it is touching the outside aluminum foil. Slow bring the other end towards the clip on the comb a much larger spark will jump between the two. You can also discharge it by touching the outside of the jar and touching the clip. Depending on how much you charged the jar, you can get quite a shock, so be careful.
