This is a very rough cut of a pilot for a possible tv show where the viewer gets to influence the show live! The viewer logs on to choose three ingredients that the guest makes a recipe with and eats live! During the show viewers can tweet in answers to health questions the guest will ask throughout the show. The aim is to educate and entertain to help people live healthier lives and be more resourceful with the things in their kitchen. For the pilot we lobbied FB users to vote on 3 of these ten ingredients. They had about 30 minutes to make their decision and posted the results on FB.

This project involved two puppets a green screen and a website where viewers can go online, select images and have them appear live on screen! I think we did everything we sought out to do however a significant amount of time was spent on code. Unfortunately I was not familiar as the coding got deeper and deeper so I wasn’t able to help with that aspect. During our meetings we tried to come up with a story line or character development but I think we got hung up on the technical aspects of it and didn’t end up revisiting those important aspects. Next time I really hope that I can help create clear sorry and compelling content as well as the good tech side of it. We probably could have delegated responsibilities and come together to practice so that the actual show, not just the technical aspects of it, worked.

I think that our project went very well. Some things I wish we could have worked on more as our interface for the show site (having a site that loked more official). What was really important for us was fostering a good rapport so that we could interact well with each other on stage. It would be interesting to do this with the audience in one room while we streamed it live but as discussed in class I think for improv we would definately need a live audience to feed off of regardless. So perhaps both audience and folks at home can play. I would have also liked for us to practice the flow better in terms of transitions and having a filler for when people are texting in their suggestions. I really admired how the Low Brow Group worked on this it really showed and made it feel more like a quality production. It worked out well though. I as worried that people would be too busy texting and would not be able to also pay attention but it seemed to work itself out that they were not texting the whole time.

Response to Will Crest:

I was very interested in the audio watermarks that Will Crest talked about because I was personally interested int he ‘shazaam’ technology. I actually have been talkign a lot to people outside of the class and outside of ITP about what they think about having an interactive experience while watching TV. I asked them if they would be willing to download an app that would be running during the show and interact with it during the audio watermarks. Most people didn’t seem too enthused and as I personally thought about it a little more I figure that the medium itself has to be different. For some reason people didn’t seem too thrilled about having an app open while watching TV but most people seemed to respond well to having an interactive experience while they were watching a show online or on their mobile device.

9.12.2011

After watching a few live sports games including the U.S. open, Saints Vs. Packers, and a little college football, I asked sports fans and bar goers what they would like to make the experience more interactive. I soon realized that live sports is already an active pastime for viewers. They eat wings, cheer, share with friends, comment, and drink beer. Even if they were alone at home, the experience of live sports doesn’t really lend itself to the viewer being distracted by an interaction which would take away from the live game.

One idea I came up with is what if there was a medium for the comments people say (aloud) in their homes or at a bar to be shared with other viewers or the audience during commercials. Kind of like how when you play large Multiplayer video games you can speak into the headphones and other players can hear you. This would probably be more fun for viewers who are watching at home alone or on their lap tops or phones.

I then moved on to Internet TV and watched JustinLive TV. The show I watched is already pretty interactive. I watched a Tech Live show at http://www.justin.tv/twit#/w/1757302944/5 Late Night Tech with Eric Lanigan (MWF 8pm Pacific Time). It has a number on the screen you can call and he talks tech to you live. There is also a comment section on the right hand side but of course it is all just people being annoying. SO it is interactive in two ways, you can call in and he will speak directly to you and you can also interact with other viewers on the chat scroll.

The inspiration:
A puppets whose form shapes the story.

When I heard the word glove puppet I immediately thought of a latex glove blown up. What if it fell in love but could not hug the person it had it’s eye on? Will it die? Or will it explode in a ball of glory? This was the premise for our story. Of course the puppet has no eyes. Love is blind.
