OBJECT/EFFECT - bycccp

PROJECT

Using sound, light and motion, OBJECT/EFFECT presents the viewer with an experience of text extruded and refracted in space.

DESCRIPTION

•  Space to be used: Hallway of ITP.

•  9 square mirrors hanging from the ceiling reflect a projection of a textual message. Each mirror is attached to a vibrating motor. The motors are moving the mirrors, causing the projection to be difficult to read. When a viewer's presence is detected by a proximity sensor just below the mirrors, the motors stop shaking and the projection becomes more orderly.

•  Minimalism (art instead of an object, an atmosphere, an ambient).

THESIS

In order to expand some minimalist concerns into the sphere of interactive art, we plan to create an environment whose design explores the material relationships between light, text, and motion. Specifically, our motivation stems from Donald Judd's stance that Art is meant only to be seen, forefronting the visual aspect of the experience,

As we are able to get close to something...

LOOK
SEE and
COMPREHEND

The following text will be projected in a loop above the cubes. This text creates a visible architecture as it moves about the projection's virtual 3D space; it also scales in relation to the viewer's relative position to the installation:

"SOMETIMES I FORGET WHAT I SEE OR LEARN, BUT I CAN STILL COMPREHEND, SOMETIMES
I FORGET WHAT I HAD SEEN OR LEARNED, BUT I CAN STILL COMPREHEND, SOMETIMES..."

Here was our original layout that we decided was too ambitious to complete before the final...
We experimented projecting a processing applet that moves text in 3D space on a stack of boxes and on mylar. The original processing applet can be viewed here.
