edgey!

after a few attempted experiments i finally got java working with my video camera and liking my code..
for the edge detection exercises i managed to get the previous x axys pixel compairison and also the previous y axys pixel compairison working. check the short demo-movie (x = green; y = red):

Keeping on with the code experiments i tried to do edge detection for each of the 3 color channels independently and getting the processed results in different output rasters. Not that i still have a edge detection algorythm working anymore.. but i got some ghosting efects and color rasters overlapping.

meditation001_poly-rhythmic-tempo-f3ed-wh4t-120

this is my first jitter exercise! still banging my head but a bit more happier with the results..
the objective of this exercise was to create a polyrhythmic texture.
I decided to leave a movie file playing with no interaction in the its tempo, timeline properties, but playing with rough cuts and masks on the screen. The aspect ratio of the movie file is 4:3 so I used that for my shape construction. As the rhythms beat in 3 and in 4 i've taken the beat parts and attributed a screen chunk to each, so for beats in 4, 4 columns and for beats in 3, 3 rows.
Each part (mask) of the image is only shown during a beat duration, leaving some trails behind when it is replaced by the next beat/masks, breaking the image appart in both space and time.

rythmconstructor_buildr-003??

ok..i managed to do the task involved but i'm not so happy with the results.
I tried to make a tecnho wave mixer of somesort but i did find hard mixing all the 3 waves and trying to keep their interactions close to what i wanted. result? dark-slow-noise-tedious-beats...
there are 3 waves modulated by amplitude in an additive synth. press 'q', 'w' and 'r'!

here's a recording::

my first . .. waves!

(please don´t listen in the morning) could also be the title of this post.
my synths exploration (so far) attracted me to extreme frequencies.. very low and/or very high... keep your hand on the volume level (turn it in both directions, please)
i've been also enjoying the rhythmic structures and clicks from "overflows"(?).

the following tracks(?) are the result of my wave shapping--modulating experiences using max-msp~ .
I didn´t manage to follow all instructions in the tutorial.. but had a lot of fun experimenting!
As i kept loosing myself in patches and waves i couldn´t keep up with 10secs time frame.. sometimes there are longer and shorter versions of recordings from the same patches.

hav'fun!

'art of noise' - noise manifesto

Around the beggining of the 20th century the changes were cathastrophic in everything, cars allowed individuals to cross countries in incredible fast speeds, machines were manufacturing at full throttle ending consumers individualization, empires were collapsing to the power of the people.
arts were more prolyphic and rebelled than ever!

Around the beggining of the 20th century the changes were cathastrophic in everything, cars allowed individuals to cross countries in incredible fast speeds, machines were manufacturing at full throttle ending consumers individualization, empires were collapsing to the power of the people.
arts were more prolyphic than ever!
In 'the art of noises' Luigi Russolo exposes his view of a needed change in arts, especially in the musical arts: the great classics were loosing their power, incapable of arousing any feeling as thay had done for centuries, completely misplaced in a fast paced society.
Reflecting man and society the next big step was the incorporation and acceptance of the new sounds ("noises") in musical creation, noises have variety, tones and harmonies; and are more than capable of transmiting emotions (probably the most capable of doing so regarding that time history!). After centuries of silence the machines had come and brought with them their noisy engines!
Along with the search and thirst for new sounds grew the need of inventing new instruments and more experimentation..

imho a close situation happened again almost a century after regarding the electronic dance music scene:
after a fast paced evolution in technique and styles, around 2002 the electronic dance music scene hadn´t seem any strong innovation since the strong impulse given by IDM masters like aphex twin or squarepusher. There was techno, house , jungle and drum'n'bass, trance and an endless list of sub-genres but there was also a lack of innovation. After a first disgusted reaction against music done using machines, the commercial side of the scene was bigger than ever and the emotion was sort of being lost; everybody was creating music through electronics and the same sounds were used everywhere. Though some sub-scenes kept on having good producers and quality in some circuits there there wasn´t much left to be created, and innovation was more than welcome.
In the beggining of the new century and feeling the hangover of a digital and information revolution, in many things comparable Russolo's post industrial revolution, noise music was prolific. mashup and breakcore started invading scenes, new kinds of electronic experimentation, ultra-sampling and de-constructive techniques were boosting too!
Also around this time one of the most prolific creators of electronic noise music, koji tano, died and as his hommage and endless number of artists created covers of his musics, later released as a 10 disc compilation for free download to everyone interested in apreciating, or just learning about one of the biggest masters of noise music.

what about in now?
