Technology Needs Assessment

Use the device for 2 consecutive days

Cell Phone: I use it everyday.

Describe what is frustrating for you to use this

Physical: Shape is very geometric and metallic. It has boring and cold look. Customized and organic style would make it friendly. Use of soft colors would help to make it look pretty as well. It doesn’t look pleasant enough to invite me to use it often. I only use it when I need it. When I have access to other communication tools such as regular phone or e-mail I prefer those to use instead.

Construction: Nested structure makes everything complicated. It is hard to find what I look in the menu. It takes long time to change some of the settings. It shouldn’t be too complicated for user to change, edit and access to some of the specifics in the menu.

Technology: I miss most of my calls because of the voice choice. I can not keep volume too high because I am either at work or at school but when I vibrate it I don’t hear it. There should have been a different solution to sound part of cell phones such as expressing sound visually so if people can not hear it can see the color change or maybe temperature change so when it rings it gets warm.

Note each time you use it (time of day)

I use it at random times everyday.

What abilities do you rely on to use this

    1. Motor/physical: I don’t like holding it and looking at it. Pushing buttons is hard because they are too close to each others. Maybe flat button solution (Q touch) for us and voice respond button solution for handicaps. There should have been a better way of using it rather than holding by hands especially for disabled people who can not use their arms or hands.
    2. Cognitive: Not inviting, friendly and warm. Don’t want to use it since it doesn’t solve my problems.
    3. Visual: Color and shape is unpleasant.
    4. Hearing: I miss most of my calls and getting back to voice mail takes long time because of the menu settings and button design.
    5. Other: I drop it all the time. If a device is easy to drop then there is a problem with the design of it.
