Kinetic Artist

Mark Bischof makes these clock-like machines, the most famous of which is called: "Markrokosmos" I've always been fascinated with the idea of a perpetual motion machine pursued during renaissance times. It is, of course, a myth. But one action triggering more actions is the source of long-ago childhood mechanical delights. Another reason I liked Bischof's work stemmed from the fact that he was originally a cabinetmaker/furniture maker of sorts. He crafted beautiful things from wood that fit precisely together and sometimes folded into themselves (see "Easle"). He then experimented with marbles rolling down wooden tracks, and eventually ended up creating this magnificent mechanism that fills an entire room. There is no video online of this machine in its entirety, but snippets of individual actions tease the viewer into imagining the grand clock maker stature of this installation.
