My purpose for this midterm project is not to make a game, but a review of all things I learned so far this semester. My midterm project is done with “Simple game initialization with processing.”

I named this project “When Zoog Met Wooh,” kind of like when Harry met Sally. Before explaining the use of my project code, I want to tell you a brief background story.

Concept : Simple game initialization with Processing(when zOOg met wOOh..)

Background Story:
- zOOg from Mars…One day, he come to Earth.
- zOOg(alien) and wOOh (human being like) met each other accidentally.
- zOOg fell in love with her at first sight because she is so sexy and beautiful.
zOOg has never met anyone like her.
- But zOOg dosn’t know how to show her that he loves her,
because he is an alien…from Mars…
- He tries to get her attention but it is annoying to her, she thinks he is very unusual
and weird looking, so she doesn’t understand his behavior.
- She tries to get away from him… by making duplicates of her self
- He tries to capture her so she can’t not get away.
- He tries to catch her but she runs away, whenever he catches up with her it is her
duplicate.. so he tries again to capture wOOh.
- However, when he finally catches the real wOOh, he realize what real love is..
- He releases wOOh, and they both begin to like each other.

Art and Film: Interactions
04.gif
Moving Pictures is presented in four components: the introductory section suggests parallels between the first American films and traditional artistic genres such as landscape and marine painting. The second section examines the rise of motion photography and its influence on depictions of the human figure in art and film in the 1890s. The third demonstrates the post-1900 shift in painterly and filmic depictions of urban life: from Impressionist visions to gritty American realist images. The concluding section explores the mutual fascination between practitioners of the fine arts and film in the early days of the new medium. Along with paintings and movies, the exhibition includes posters, early views of kinetoscope parlors, and films about art and artists, photographers, and filmmaking. Highlighting the multifaceted interrelationships between film and other visual art forms, Moving Pictures offers a groundbreaking reinterpretation of a crucial period in modern American visual culture.

This is my "Serial" assignment, I don't have a sensor (sold out), so I used a potentia-meter to control the voltage and I tried to use a motor for the other resistor. I don't know if the motor did anything since it's an output device, not input, but I was able to get the results I was looking for in the "Serial Monitor window". I saw a bunch of 1001101 being generated by the program.

03_Test_series.gif
Our test to see if we can use the LED in series, however we found out that there is too much degragation using the series method so we decided to go with the parallell method for the LED display.

Our Soundelier in reverse mode. - How does it look?-

draft_process.gif
Our rough raft process - our initial design for the project -

1. Physical Computing…..

1) Concept and purpose: Soundelier
We are constantly surrounded by sound wherever we go. Soundelier is a chandelier that dances around and emits light depending on varying degree of sound volume.
The greater the intensity of sound, the more energetic Soundelier becomes.

2) Process:

- input : We use Velleman K1803 as our amplifier

- We will experiment with different microphones

- 1 Arduino and a multiplexer

- output:

i. movement – Soundelier rotates back and forth within a limited range

ii. lights – blinking LED’s

- the physical thing: build a chandelier out of wire

3) Problem solving:

- what kind of multiplexer

- In any case, the Arduino must run on battery. How???

Servo - Motor - PCom week4 Lab

This is my Servo motor - the NYU store ran out of the variable resistor so I made it with 10kohm resistor.
my Servo Fan is now 2 speed, one speed is High (no resistance) and the other one is 10kohm resistance.

This is my 2 speed fan with Arduino program.

Analog In - PCOM Lab week3

Digital Out Lab - PCom week2

I had a difficult time doing this lab because Arduino was sold out and I had to wait almost 3 weeks for this. However, I was able to get this working almost 1 week later then I expected because the Arduino program did NOT work like it was suppose to. After long struggle and crying, I found out that my JAVA version on my MAC needed upgrade. After upgrading, everything worked!

it was a very interesting Lab, when the switch is closed the red LED is turned on (HIGH), and when the switch is open the yellow LED is turned on (HIGH). short program but interesting to do programming.

I took some pictures of signs. I drove my car all day yesterday in edge water, New Jersey to look for scenery opposite Manhattan. I didn’t have a concept in mind and so I was just enjoying the good weather and I was looking for something interesting. I was driving around and I realized I needed some ink for my printer, so I went into staples to buy some ink. When I came out of staples, I saw a big T-Mobile sign with a missing ‘I’ character. Then I saw another sign, a diner sign with another missing ‘I’ character. From that point on, I followed traffic signs near by my house taking some pictures of all of the different types of traffic signs I found. I thought this was interesting because the signs here differ from Korea, such as stop signs, do not block signs, and no turn on red signs and so on. I also thought it could tell about a lot of other things, such signs, kind of like life, has lots of regulations. Kind of like our lives stuck in regulations, or having to follow guidelines or regulations.

Bill Viola MoMa Field Trip

Bill Viola
American, born 1951
Stations 1994
Video / Sound, one synchronizer, five granite slabs, five projectors, and fire projection screens.

Gift of the Bohen Foundation in honor of Richard E. Oldenburg, 1997

Station comprises five video projections, each displaying a nude figure suspended in water, accompanied by a lulling soundtrack of underwater gurgles and murmurs. Floating heads-down, the figures drift slowly out of the image frames. Their reflections in the polished slabs of granite placed at the foot of each screen give the impression of figures swimming in pools of black liquid. The thirteenth-century Persian poet Jahal al-Din Rumi, a favorite author of the artist, proclaimed: “With every moment a world is born and dies. And know that for you, with every moment comes death and renewal” Likewise, in Stations there is no ending or beginning-every instant is a meditation on the continual cycles of life, death and rebirth.

I saw several interesting work in the show. This work is one of them. First of all, the underwater sound was very interesting, because I was able to hear it before seeing the work. It allowed me to wonder what was happening, this is a new experience since there was no visual evidence in the portrayal in the beginning of this artwork. Secondly, in a surprising visual effect, there is an upside down nude figure suspended in water. In a dark room, I tried to understand author’s concept, the shocking visual perception of something not quite ordinary and a feeling of disorientation and curiosity. Lastly, in terms of technology of the visual shot, after taking a long time to try to understand what or how it was done, I realized that the artist had flipped the projection which showed me a different point of view. This was the artwork station that I spent the most time looking over.

Understanding New Media

Understanding New Media

Communications Lab(Morgan Barnard)

Youjoeng PAIK

My feelings after this reading were that it provided a clear explanation for what New Media is in a very detailed way. I have studied this field related to new media in my past studies, but I could not understand these concepts clearly. It was a new field that I was involved in while I was studying motion graphics in Korea and the courses I took did not have clearly defined subjects or explanation of what new media is and what the fundamentals are behind it. Studying “New Media,” in Korea without clear and descriptive knowledge of what New Media is, I often wondered why I have to take computer programming, or how this could be applied to different types of genres the modern society. There were many questions that I could not answer, and there were also very little references in Korean University programs that were available for reference. The only references that were available were in English and because of this many students had difficulty translating and understanding the material.

This book or (reading) written by Lev Manovich not only gave me some clues to understanding new media but also allowed me to assemble my past experiences and knowledge about this subject. After reading, I could understand clearly what is Digital or Analog Media. Moreover, I am somewhat inspired to do challenging things in Digital Media. I believe that based on these concepts in New Media and Old Media there can be a varieties of applications and possibilities for us to pursue something new and unique in the New Media era.

I think the most interesting part of this reading were the part in this book that suggest several principles of New Media. Principals such as Numerical Representation which are composed of digital code, Modularity, Automation, Variability, and Transcoding and of this the description that on one level, new media is old media that has been digitized. In the last part of this reading, it suggests how New Media differ from Old Media by exemplifying cinema as New Media. It is said that New Media is analog media converted to a digital representation and that this allows different media types to be displayed using one machine such as a computer. It is also said that in it’s representation it contains a fixed amount of information and that it can be copied endlessly without degradation. I think the most important part or the most interesting fact about New Media that it is interactive, and in the process of interaction the user can choose which elements to display or which paths to follow, thus generating a unique work. In this way the user becomes the co-author of the work.
In short, I have found a very interesting point of view in this reading. It is the concept of the representation in New Media. “Concept of Representation,” seems easy to understand, but I think it contains profound meaning in New Media. I believe that every element and concept of New Media have already existed in media before, and now we represent them by manipulating, controlling, assembling, sorting, and distributing them in our own work. I feel that change from analog to digital is inevitable, not revolutionary.
