Moving Pictures / American Art and Early Film, 1890-1910
New York University Grey Art Gallery
I visited the Grey Gallery a few times, but I never saw the “Moving Pictures Exhibition” because I didn’t have enough information about the Grey Gallery. But when I finally found it and saw it, it was a better exhibition then I expected. I thought it was a great experience for me to see Eadweard Muybridge’s work directly. During my graduate thesis about motion graphic pictures in Korea, I needed to study about the history of film and moving images, and so one of the people I researched was Eadweard Myubridge. At that time, I knew him as one of the pioneers of expressing moving images. One of these images that I remember is an image of a horse running. In photography he is well known primarily for his early use of multiple cameras to capture motion. I am always happy to visit any museum, but this museum is especially satisfying because there are many art works and creative things that I have never experienced. I am definitely inspired here.
I was thinking that this Moving Pictures gallery focused on juxtaposition between moving images and art works with similar layouts and subjects from different artists and photographers. It was a different point of view for me to apreciate, I saw the comparison and the similarities and also the differences. I believe it is important for people who study new media to understand the history of films and the technology behind it. I think it can give us a better understanding of what we are trying to accomplish and possibly give us different insights and new ideas on how to develop new ideas from old ones.
