I’m still plugging away at my one-word-per-line poem based on pronunciation analysis.
I think I have succeed for the most part in creating a sound-parsing module that will score lists of words relative to an “anchor” word with respect to alliteration, rhyming, overall phoneme and rhythmic (syllable count, stress patterns) similarity. (See diagram at bottom.)
On top of that, I’m just beginning to play around with very simple “formulas”.py for how to “tune” the “one-word-at-a-time” poem.
I’ve learned a few interesting things and starting to get a handle on how I can manipulate the progression of words.
- Using the tan function on syllable count unsurprisingly yields dramatic swings in rhythm. (See poem built on the word “test”.)
- It’s also fairly easy to tweak the “circularity” of a poem by controlling the range of top-scoring words you allow the system to choose from. If you only select the top-scoring word, the word may never change. If you select from the top 100 words, you’ll get wild fluctuations. If you fluctuate that cap according to a gently undulating cos function, you’ll get gently fluctuating phases of circularity and unexpected disruptions.
- The “blood” word lists below are all generated with relatively gentle sin and cos functions controlling the weighting of alliteration and rhyme in the scoring system. (The effect is a bit obscured by the lever controlling the “circularity” of the poem, but you can kind of see how it moves from being alliterative to being rhyming and back again.
- I tried the same formula on blood using different word lists: a list of common words, Paradise Lost, the Bible and Moby Dick. I think slowly changing the word-source will be another interesting way to shift the “tone” of the poem.
And of course, I have yet to make use of my ngram and collocation word lists, which will hopefully yield semi-coherent phrases and sentences as another layer on top of the rhythmic, rhyming qualities I have now with just the sound analysis.
