Readings and case studies provide background for class discussions on the theory and practice of designing musical controllers and the process of integrating them in a musical performance, with attention to the idiosyncrasies that emerge from the figure of the inventor \/ composer \/ performer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students design and prototype a musical instrument &#8211; a complete system encompassing musical controller, algorithm for mapping input to sound, and the sound output itself. A technical framework for prototyping performance controllers is made available. In this case, the <em>OSC Monitor<\/em> included in the <em>Live Connection Kit<\/em> can be a useful troubleshooting tool.<\/li><li>Make an intermediary app using any of the libraries above. The app receives the OSC messages from the controller, and converts them to MIDI messages that are sent to Live and mapped using <em>MIDI Learn<\/em>.<\/li><\/ol><\/li><li>If the sender is a <strong>standard hardware\/software controller<\/strong> like LeapMotion or TouchOSC, you can use the equivalent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ableton.com\/en\/packs\/connection-kit\/\">Live Connection Kit<\/a> devices to receive their messages, and the process will be very similar to using the <em>MIDI Learn<\/em> feature you used last week.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>A standard hardware\/software controller<\/strong> like TouchOSC or LeapMotion, which the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ableton.com\/en\/packs\/connection-kit\/\">Live Connection Kit<\/a> has devices for. You could also follow their protocol specs as you construct the messages in your own device.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Note: the Connection Kit also has an OSC Send device which receives MIDI notes and sends OSC messages. Either next class or the week after, you will do a mock performance with it on the Performance Garage stage, for the rest of the class. Time is tight, so please arrive 10 minutes early if you can. To prepare: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Do a couple of improvisation sessions to explore the expressive possibilities of your instrument. What kinds of gestures does it afford? What different sound spaces can you get into? <\/li><li>Plan for a 3 &#8211; 5 minute performance and rehearse it. Where do you start? Where does that lead? How do you end? Is there enough to explore in the instrument to sustain your interest for that long? Keep in mind: if you are engaged in playing the instrument, chances are the audience will be, too.<\/li><li>Consider the audience&#8217;s point of view. Will they be able to understand what you are doing, and how it affects the music? Do you need a detail camera? Anything else? <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The purpose of this early performance is for everybody to get a chance to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Break the ice and perform on stage. <\/li><li>Get acquainted with the Garage space and its equipment<\/li><li>Get a sense of what the flow of the final performance will be <\/li><li>To do the above ahead of conceptualizing the instrument+performance you will work on during the second half of the semester.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We will have a setup ready for you to connect to the following, from the stage:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Stereo audio<\/strong>. Connect your audio output via an 1\/8&#8221; audio cable (we&#8217;ll have an aux cable ready, like in class), or via XLR \/ 1\/4&#8221; cables, which you&#8217;ll bring. These will go to a Scarlett audio interface on stage.<\/li><li><strong>Projector and large screen<\/strong> (behind the stage). Connect your USB-C or HDMI video output (we&#8217;ll have an HDMI cable ready, with an USB-C dongle)<\/li><li><strong>Detail camera<\/strong>. If it makes sense for your project, you can project a closer view of your instrument using a detail camera mounted on the stage table. You can connect the camera: <ul><li>directly to the projector, or <\/li><li>get the camera stream into your computer via USB-C or HDMI ports, and choose how to project it (side-by-side with your p5 sketch? your Max patch? your own video content? or, processed in some way?<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While you are not performing, you will be writing notes to your peers, with this <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/15Ju55sEXL7vSuBdxHbBKiZJLJqRPiGSYjYNQn3_bnJc\/edit#\">feedback sheet<\/a> as a guide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<a id=\"session-5\" style=\"visibility: hidden;\" href=\"#\">anchor<\/a>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Session 5. Connect your audio output via an 1\/8\u201d audio cable (we\u2019ll have an aux cable ready, like in class), or via XLR \/ 1\/4\u201d cables, which you\u2019ll bring. These will go to a Scarlett audio interface on stage. <\/li><li><strong>4 channel<\/strong> (for Dave!). We will connect the 4 audio outputs on your interface to the wall panel via XLR cables.  The distance from the edge of the stage (downstage) to the wall plate is approx. 11 feet.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Projector and large screen<\/strong>&nbsp;(behind the stage). Connect your USB-C or HDMI video output (we\u2019ll have an HDMI cable ready, with an USB-C dongle)<\/li><li><strong>Detail camera<\/strong>. If it makes sense for your project, you can project a closer view of your instrument using a detail camera mounted on the stage table. You can connect the camera:<ul><li>directly to the projector, or<\/li><li>get the camera stream into your computer via USB-C or HDMI ports, and choose how to project it (side-by-side with your p5 sketch? your Max patch? your own video content? or, processed in some way?)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Note: as we discussed in class, we are considering having a secondary screen on-stage during the show, for streaming the detail documentation camera. This will depend on the space available on-stage, given the Egress area.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Assignments<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Finish your instrument.<\/strong> After dress rehearsal, you should only do minor tweaks, not add new functions or make significant changes. <\/li><li><strong>Rehearse your performance<\/strong> as many times as you can. Make sure it is under 5 minutes.<\/li><li><strong>Practice setting up and tearing down your project<\/strong>, too, with your assigned stage helper. Ideally, do this in a space separate from where you&#8217;re working, and keep in mind the distances from your project to the stage mixer, and so on. These assignments are required and you should be prepared to show\/talk about them in class. It is expected that everyone in the class will create and maintain a blog for their assignments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Attendance is mandatory. Please inform your teacher via email if you are going to miss a class. Two unexcused absences is cause for failing the class. (An unexcused lateness of 10 minutes or more is equivalent to 1\/2 an absence.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This class will be participatory, you are expected to participate in discussions and give feedback to other students both in class and participate with their projects. This (along with attendance) is 30% of your grade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Class will culminate with a final performance of student projects. You are expected to participate in the final performance of your NIME, as well as previous rehearsals throughout the semester. This will comprise 30% of your grade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Statement of Academic Integrity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plagiarism is presenting someone else\u2019s work as though it were your own. More specifically, plagiarism is to present as your own: A sequence of words quoted without quotation marks from another writer or a paraphrased passage from another writer\u2019s work or facts, ideas or images composed by someone else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Statement of Principle<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The core of the educational experience at the Tisch School of the Arts is the creation of original academic and artistic work by students for the critical review of faculty members. It is therefore of the utmost importance that students at all times provide their instructors with an accurate sense of their current abilities and knowledge in order to receive appropriate constructive criticism and advice. Any attempt to evade that essential, transparent transaction between instructor and student through plagiarism or cheating is educationally self-defeating and a grave violation of Tisch School of the Arts community standards.
