Readings and case studies provide background for class discussions on the theory and practice of designing musical controllers and the process of integrating them in a musical performance, with attention to the idiosyncrasies that emerge from the figure of the inventor \/ composer \/ performer.<\/p>\n<p>Students design and prototype a musical instrument \u2013 a complete system encompassing musical controller, algorithm for mapping input to sound, and the sound output itself. A technical framework for prototyping performance controllers is made available. A\u00a0<strong>gestural interface<\/strong>\u00a0with at least two interface controls: one with on\/off states (like a push button), one with a range of values (like a potentiometer).\u00a0Your interface can either be\u00a0<strong>physical<\/strong>\u00a0(sensors connected to Arduino), or\u00a0<strong>digital<\/strong>\u00a0(for example, skeleton tracking connected to p5).<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-background\">2. A\u00a0<strong>controller\u00a0<\/strong>that reads the control values, maps \/ thresholds \/ smooths them if needed, and\u00a0<strong>sends out MIDI messages<\/strong>\u00a0(note on, note off, CC). The controller can be an Arduino sketch or a p5.js sketch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-background\">3. Is there enough to explore in the instrument to sustain your interest for that long? Will they be able to understand what you are doing, and how it affects the music? Do you need a detail camera?
