A&nbsp;<strong>gestural interface<\/strong>&nbsp;with at least two interface controls: one with on\/off states (like a push button), one with a range of values (like a potentiometer).&nbsp;Your interface can either be&nbsp;<strong>physical<\/strong>&nbsp;(sensors connected to Arduino), or&nbsp;<strong>digital<\/strong>&nbsp;(for example, skeleton tracking connected to p5).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2. A&nbsp;<strong>controller&nbsp;<\/strong>that reads the control values, maps \/ thresholds \/ smooths them if needed, and&nbsp;<strong>sends out MIDI messages<\/strong>&nbsp;(note on, note off, CC). The controller can be an Arduino sketch or a p5.js sketch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">3. A&nbsp;<strong>sound generator<\/strong>&nbsp;(Ableton Live) that receives the MIDI messages, and plays back, synthesizes, or modulates sounds in response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Be intentional in picking your controls: consider making your own switches out of any conductive material (rather than a standard push button); consider using sensors like flex, stretch, vibration, accelerometer, gyroscope (rather than a standard potentiometer).&nbsp;<br><br><strong>Focus on what gestures you are using and the affordances for each gesture to control sound and also communication sound control in different ways<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Readings<\/strong><br>On the question of what is a musical instrument:<br>&#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1nf4OY8fyoYDcwexnbos2IrWzd62p-yjO\/view?usp=sharing\">Instrumentality. I highly recommend picking one of the instrument experiments you\u2019ve done so far. In weeks 6 and 7, you will do a mock performance with it on the Performance Garage stage, for the rest of the class. Time is tight, so please arrive 10 minutes early if you can. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To prepare:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do a couple of improvisation sessions to explore the expressive possibilities of your instrument. What kinds of gestures does it afford? What different sound spaces can you get into?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plan for a 3 \u2013 5 minute performance and rehearse it. Where do you start? Where does that lead? How do you end? Is there enough to explore in the instrument to sustain your interest for that long? Keep in mind: if you are engaged in playing the instrument, chances are the audience will be, too.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consider the audience\u2019s point of view. Will they be able to understand what you are doing, and how it affects the music? Do you need a detail camera? Anything else?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consider you will need to transport your project off the floor.  Do you need an enclosure? Does it work with a readymade?  Do you need a perfboard? or a custom carrying case? We will connect the 4 audio outputs on your interface to the wall panel via XLR cables. Readings and case studies provide background for class discussions on the theory and practice of designing musical controllers and the process of integrating them in a musical performance, with attention to the idiosyncrasies that emerge from the figure of the inventor \/ composer \/ performer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students design and prototype a musical instrument \u2013 a complete system encompassing musical controller, algorithm for mapping input to sound, and the sound output itself. A technical framework for prototyping performance controllers is made available. As they prepare their prototypes for a final live concert where they (or guest musicians) will perform with their instruments,&nbsp; students focus on musical composition and improvisation techniques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prerequisites: ITPG-GT.2233 (Introduction to Computational Media) and ITPG-GT.2301 (Physical Computing).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">*NOTE: Syllabus is a living doc and may be amended to fit specific class needs or accommodations<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Policies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Evaluation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grades will be determined according to the following breakdown:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Regular Assignments 40%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Participation and Attendance 30%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Final Project 30%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please see ITP\u2019s statement on&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/help.itp.nyu.edu\/academic-policies\/pass-fail\">Pass\/Fail<\/a>&nbsp;which states that a \u201cPass\u201d is equivalent to an \u201cA\u201d or a \u201cB\u201d while anything less would be considered a \u201cFail\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We will have weekly assignments that are relevant to material from the previous class. These assignments are required and you should be prepared to show\/talk about them in class. It is expected that everyone in the class will create and maintain a blog for their assignments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Attendance is mandatory. Please inform your teacher via email if you are going to miss a class. Two unexcused absences is cause for failing the class. (An unexcused lateness of 10 minutes or more is equivalent to 1\/2 an absence.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This class will be participatory, you are expected to participate in discussions and give feedback to other students both in class and participate with their projects. This (along with attendance) is 30% of your grade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Class will culminate with a final performance of student projects. You are expected to participate in the final performance of your NIME, as well as previous rehearsals throughout the semester. This will comprise 30% of your grade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Statement of Academic Integrity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plagiarism is presenting someone else\u2019s work as though it were your own. More specifically, plagiarism is to present as your own: A sequence of words quoted without quotation marks from another writer or a paraphrased passage from another writer\u2019s work or facts, ideas or images composed by someone else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"use-of-ai-tools-and-ai-assistance\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Use of AI Tools and AI assistance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This course does not explicitly cover how to use AI text, image, sound, or code generation tools.&nbsp; &nbsp;You are strongly&nbsp;<strong>discouraged<\/strong>&nbsp;from using AI tools until you fully understand the fundamentals of the frameworks you are using and the AI helper you are using.&nbsp; AI tools can be extremely helpful and powerful in the right context, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tutors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Debugging helpers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inspiration or starting points<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complex Algorithmic generation tools<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Submitting uncredited code from an AI assistant or having AI generate code or ideas for you is plagiarism and subject to the same scrutiny as outlined above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you use AI tools you must cite your tool and complete prompt \/ chat history as well as discuss usage with your professor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Statement of Principle<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The core of the educational experience at the Tisch School of the Arts is the creation of original academic and artistic work by students for the critical review of faculty members.
