{"id":284,"date":"2018-06-05T02:55:54","date_gmt":"2018-06-05T02:55:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/itp.nyu.edu\/adjacent\/issue-3\/?p=284"},"modified":"2024-10-08T20:28:54","modified_gmt":"2024-10-08T20:28:54","slug":"articulations-a-fragment-fragment-fragment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/itp.nyu.edu\/adjacent\/issue-3\/articulations-a-fragment-fragment-fragment\/","title":{"rendered":"Articulations: A Fragment Fragment Fragment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Articulations<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a book of poetry I made that investigates how similarity (whether phonetic, syntactic or semantic) is used to create a sense of cohesion in poetic language. The poetry in the book is constructed from a corpus of several million lines of poetry that I extracted from Project Gutenberg, a database of thousands of texts in the public domain. Using a phonetic dictionary of English called the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary, I created a computational model of phonetic similarity that assigns a vector to each line of poetry in the corpus based on the phonetic features of each line. These vectors are constructed in such a way that two lines with similar sounds are \u201ccloser\u201d (i.e., more similar) than the vectors that correspond to two dissimilar-sounding lines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using this set of vectors to quickly calculate similarity among all of the lines in the corpus, a computer program constructs the text of the book using a technique called a \u201crandom walk.\u201d The program first selects a line of poetry from the corpus at random, and then finds the line of poetry that sounds most similar to that line and adds it to the output. The program then finds the line of poetry that sounds most similar to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> line and adds it to the output, and so forth, excluding any line that has previously been included. The end result is a kind of poetry where cohesion is achieved <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">only<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> through phonetic similarity. It\u2019s a lot of fun to read out loud!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The text of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Articulations<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published by Counterpath was just one of several \u201cversions\u201d of the text produced by multiple runs of the program.
