“'Am I connected' is the power and ground of networks” - Tom Igoe

Advice from Client Pong demos:

  • Define “send events” for input from a physical interface that strictly define the parameters for a clear signal.
  • The server has a queue with a designated space for each client. If you send more than the allotted amount, you overload the server and lose data. Utilize a delay so this doesn't happen.
  • Always read the whole protocol so you don't miss simple things like login & logout.
  • Don't try to do too much with one component of your device's system if you can spread the tasks to other parts.

Scripted vs Complied Languages

scripted – Languages that not require compilation are called scripting languages. Perl, PHP,Python and Ruby are scripting languages. Those languages rely on our source-code all the time. Scripting languages didn’t have compiler or a compilation process. Those languages used interpreters to translate our source-code to machine executable code on the fly.

compiled- Computers do not actually understand the code we write. We need to translate our human-readable code to machine-readable code. Our code need to be translated into bits and bytes that can be executed by computers. This translation process is called compilation. Compiled languages:  C, C++ and Java .

.htaccess

This is a directory-level configuration file on your Apache server that gives a set of functions to specific directories or urls. It can be used for rewriting long, ugly URLs to shorter and more memorable ones. Or to specify the security restrictions for the particular directory, hence the filename "access". The .htaccess file is often accompanied by a .htpasswd file which stores valid usernames and their passwords.[5]

GET and POST

In HTML, one can specify two different submission methods for a form. The method is specified inside a FORM element, using the METHOD attribute. The difference between METHOD="GET" (the default) and METHOD="POST" is primarily defined in terms of form data encoding.

The HTML specifications technically define the difference between "GET" and "POST" so that former means that form data is to be encoded (by a browser) into a URL while the latter means that the form data is to appear within a message body.

Cron is a time-based job scheduler in Unix-like computer operating systems. Cron enables users to schedule jobs (commands or shell scripts) to run periodically at certain times or dates. It is commonly used to automate system maintenance or administration, though its general-purpose nature means that it can be used for other purposes, such as connecting to the Internet and downloading email.

Web Scraping

webscraper.php from Making Things Talk: https://github.com/tigoe/MakingThingsTalk2/blob/master/chapter4/project7/webscraper.php

Easy web scraping with Simple HTML DOM Parser: This php script lives up to it's name. You can choose the DOM elements you want to grab (ex. <h2>, or <p>) or use the id or class it might have (ex. <h2 id=”title”>, or <p class=”explanation”>) and it will grab all of them and put it in an array. http://simplehtmldom.sourceforge.net/
