The world of climate science and natural disaster research is filled with data, projections and simulations of the future. While there are thousands of academic papers on the impact of climate on our society, our collective ability to connect to and reimagine the future has so far been very limited. We desperately need ways to embody and empathize with what is ahead in order to make the right decisions today. This lecture will give an introduction to climate science and the extensive data that is available for public and artistic use and will discuss how disaster science can be used for artistic expression. As a long-term disaster and climate impact researcher, I hope to start a conversation about the role of art in the climate crisis and our need for deeper and more emotional engagement with the future.
