Why do all my virtual assistants have default female voices? What is speculative design? How can we use speculative & critical design as creative tools to incite discussion about complex social issues like such?

In this session, we will

1. have a dialogue about how emerging technology embodies and perpetuates existing gender biases, among many other biases, in our society
2. Introduce speculative design and critical design with examples from various artists
3. As a group, we will imagine and prototype an alternative version of Alexa using speculative design, collaging, sketching, junk shelving, and maybe a bit of p5 speech
